Job Description

Work Schedule:  10 month
Position Summary
To provide each student with the help, counsel, and learning experience they need to make progress toward educational goals established. To create a flexible instructional program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with pupils; to motivate pupils to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to live a rewarding life in an ever-changing world. To develop data based IEPs, schedule, lead and participate in parent conferences and IEP meetings. To support and differentiate instruction.
Essential Duties
 1. Consult and cooperate with all Pre-K, school personnel, and Head Start administrative staff (psychologist, guidance counselor, nurse, principal, classroom teachers, Head Start Director, Education Specialist, social services/parent involvement, and mental health specialists) in addressing the academic, mental and emotional health of children and their families, and in developing appropriate plans for school success
2. create, implement and manage student academic and behavior in the classroom by establishing and implementing individualized behavior plans and/or Individualized Education Plans.
 
3. Provide developmentally appropriate, cognitive learning experiences in language arts, physical education, art, music, health and other areas suited to the needs of young children
 
4. Develop and use instructional materials suitable for verbal or visual instruction of young children with a wide range of mental, physical, and emotional maturities
 
5. Develop in each child an awareness of his/her worth as an individual and his role in the family and community. Encourage children to express themselves creatively in art, music, and dramatic play
 
6. Provide differentiated individual and small group instruction designed to meet individual needs of children in communication skills, health habits, physical skills, and development of satisfactory self-concepts based on formal and informal assessments
 
7. Enrich the educational program through study trips to community resources such as museums, parks, farms, nature walks, etc. and through classroom visits by resource persons from the school and community. Share and interpret these experiences with children and families
 
8. Plan and coordinate the work of assistants, family members and volunteers in the classroom and on field trips in order to obtain the maximum benefit from their efforts
 
9. Develop activities for families which promote family participation and involvement in education and social activities provided for their children
 
10. Communicate regularly with parents or family members by means of parent meetings, weekly newsletters, home visits,individual parent conferences and IEP meetings. Interpret school programs to families in order to strengthen parental understanding of the individual child’s needs and the school’s role in the individual child’s life
 
11. Provide an appropriate climate to establish and reinforce acceptable school behavior, attitudes, and social skills
 
12. Create an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, interest centers and exhibits of children’s work
 
13. Plan and coordinate with Pre-K/Head Start staff members to ensure continuity of services to children
 
14. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the Pre-K/Head Start Program and self-selected professional growth activities
 
15. Select and requisition developmentally appropriate books, instructional materials, instructional supplies in compliance with NC Day Care regulations, National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Standards and Head Start Performance Standards
 
16. Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs as required
 
17. Participate in faculty committees, team meetings and in on-going evaluation activities
 
18. Participate in the development and administration of evaluative instruments as required by the district and funding sources
Education/Experience Requirements
  • BA/MA Degree (Early Childhood Education or Child Development major preferred)
  • N.C. Teacher certification (Pre-K/Kg.) required
  • Prior teaching experience preferred
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the board may find appropriate and acceptable
  • Test results showing the individual free of active tuberculosis. (All staff must have TB test results less than 12 months old. These results must be on file at the center on the first day of employment)
  • Results of medical examination
  • CPR/First Aid/Playground Safety training (New staff must complete within first six months of employment)
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50lbs.
  • Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on the telephone.
