Chapel Hill - Carrboro City Schools is Hiring an Elementary Dual Language Teacher (Spanish) Near Chapel Hill, NC

TITLE:  Elementary Dual Language Teacher-Spanish (1st Grade) 
QUALIFICATIONS:  N.C. teacher certification in Elementary Education required; Highly Qualified designation in Elementary Education required; 
BENEFITS: Full Benefits (plus 18% supplement)
SUPERVISES:  May coordinate and direct activities of paraprofessionals, volunteers and/or clerical assistants.
 
REPORTS TO:  The school principal or his/her designee
 
JOB GOAL:  To create a flexible dual language instructional program and a bilingual and bi-cultural class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to accomplish these goals in Chinese during the instructional day; to establish effective rapport with pupils; to motivate pupils to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to live a rewarding life in an ever-changing world. To provide each student with the help, counsel, and learning experience he needs to make progress toward educational goals established.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Instructs pupils in a classroom, utilizing the NC Standard Course of Study adopted by the Board of Education, and other appropriate learning activities.
  2. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
  3. Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.
  4. Creates a classroom environment that is conductive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  5. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  6. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals. Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and communicates these objectives to the pupils.
  7. Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  8. Evaluates pupils’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.
  9.  Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss pupil’s progress and interpret the school program. Makes provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  10.  Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  11.  Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher assistants and volunteers and evaluates their job performance as requested.
  12.  Maintains professional competence through inservice education activities provided by the district and through self-selected professional growth activities.
  13.  Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which the teacher will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.
  14.  Selects and requisitions Mandarin Chinese books and instructional aides; maintains required inventory; LEP testing documentation and records.
  15.  Participates in curriculum development programs as required. Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of pupil activities.
  16.  Performs other duties as assigned.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Ten-month year. Salary in accordance with certification and placement on the adopted schedule.
 
EVALUATION:  Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the Board of Education policy on the evaluation of teachers.
