POSITION

Position Title: Oral Surgery Assistant
Reports To: Surgeon, or Clinical Administrator, as assigned Location: Chapel Hill, NC

Status: Nonexempt, Regular, “At Will” Work Status, Full-Time

POSITION SUMMARY

Under direct and indirect supervision, the surgical assistant will assist the Surgeon, throughout preoperative, intraoperative, and post-operative duties and procedures.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Standing 80%.
  • Moderate noise levels from surgical setting and other lab equipment.
  • Surgical, office, and lab setting.
  • Minimum moving requirements of 50 pounds in order to transfer equipment, move and lift surgical patients, and pack and unpack supplies.
  • Frequent bending, twisting, and position changes in order to examine and service young patients.
  • Exceptional hand eye coordination and control in order to use surgical instruments for exams, to provide surgical assistance, and the taking and recording of vital signs, preparing and/or placing surgical supplies, surgical tools, and/or applying surgical products.
  • Frequent patient and interoffice personnel interaction as this position is a service provider to the Surgeon and surgical patient and heavily dependent on excellent patient interaction.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Escort patients to patient rooms and answer any general questions or forward patient/parent/guardian questions or concerns to Surgeon when necessary.
  • Timely prepare treatment area by sterilizing, positioning, and delivering instruments for surgeons’ access.
  • Actively provide hand instruments and materials to Surgeon, as needed, during exams and procedures in order to help maintain patient comfort and doctor’s efficiency.
  • Assist circulator and anesthesia provider in preparation of the patient for surgery including but not limited to tourniquet application, placement of intravenous catheters, cricoid pressure application,
  • Assist specialty procedures like: bone and graft harvesting, graft and implant preparation, anesthesia preparation, and other procedures as needed.
  • Breakdown surgical field and deliver instruments to sterilization area.
  • Postoperative function includes applying any other post-surgical wound dressing material, assesses surgical wound integrity, assists in transfer of the patient, and follows the patient to recovery.
  • Using and maintaining hazard control protocols as established by OSHA and office standards.
  • Must always represent the practice in a professional, pleasant, and cooperative manner.
  • Maintain regular attendance and adhere to assigned work schedule and office policies.
  • Must be able to comfortably and efficiently handle multiple deadlines and task assignments.
  • Must be able to work both independently and cooperatively in team settings.
  • Occasionally there may be some travel, by car or plane, required in order to participate in continuing education or seminars.
  • Maintain CPR certification
  • Record treatment information in patient records
  • Expose oral & maxillofacial / dental diagnostic x-rays
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • Other duties and tasks, as assigned periodically.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Always maintain the highest level of confidentiality to HIPAA standards.
  • Adhere to strict safety guidelines and procedures to OSHA and office standards.
  • Must be comfortable seeing and able to maintain a professional demeanor and attitude while working around blood and smells that may be unpleasant.
  • Must be detail oriented in order to work efficiently in small spaces and maintain patient comfort.
  • Must excel in forward thinking in order to anticipate the needs of the doctor as well as the patient.
  • Must demonstrate active listening by giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Must demonstrate excellent communication skills by talking to others to convey Information effectively for both our parents and patients.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED Certificate.
  • DA I certificate or DA II certificate
  • Experience with oral & maxillofacial surgical specialty highly desirable.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $19.00 - $25.00 per hour

Expected hours: 30 – 40 per week
