Charleston Collegiate School is an independent day school that strives to recognize, nurture, and challenge each of its students. Organized as a Lower School (PK-4), Middle School (5-8), and Upper School (9-12), CCS prides itself on being an independent, co-educational, non-sectarian, prekindergarten through 12th grade, located just outside of Charleston’s metropolitan area. Charleston Collegiate School offers a thirty-acre campus of vast playing fields and wooded trails and is located only twenty minutes from Charleston’s historic district on one side and Kiawah Island on the other.

CCS has a challenging, supportive, learning community that coaches students to become lifelong learners. A CCS education uses the pillars of project-based learning, financial literacy & entrepreneurship, artistic expression, and leadership through outdoor education to teach a high quality education to a diverse student body. 

Charleston Collegiate School is currently seeking an experienced, dynamic and nurturing lower school classroom teacher for the 2022-23 school year. Candidates should not only have excellent teaching and interpersonal skills but also possess a deep understanding of developmentally appropriate curriculum, a passion for working with early elementary students, and a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Lower School Second Grade Classroom Teacher should have: 

  • Dedication to diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Experience teaching in lower school grades
  • Understanding of the developmental needs of lower school students
  • Competence with innovative teaching approaches
  • An inquisitive professional learning stance
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of technology to enhance teaching and learning
  • Experience partnering with parents

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct, differentiated instruction for students, focusing on 21st century skills like collaboration, critical thinking, and problem solving. 
  • Evaluate student growth in the core elementary disciplines.
  • Implement instructional strategies and use clear and consistent classroom management in concert with the school’s core values and philosophy.
  • Identify, select, modify, and create instructional resources to meet the needs of students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and learning needs, in collaboration with grade level teammates.
  • Use classroom management systems that are focused on students’ social emotional needs. 
  • Provide a positive environment in which students are able to engage actively in meaningful learning experiences. 
  • Communicate and partner effectively with students, parents, teachers, and other professionals on a regular basis.
  • Model professional and ethical standards when working with students, families, and colleagues.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Education Bachelor's required, Master's preferred
  • Experience working with children
  • A positive ‘can-do’ attitude and growth mindset
  • A love for working with children and young people

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree
  • Experience in a classroom setting
