Job Title: English as a Second Language Long Term Substitute Teacher

Location: Venable Elementary

Reports to:Principal

FLSA Status: Exempt

Summary:

The long term subsitute teacher for ESL students is responsible for developing bilingual students’ ability to effectively perform courses of study in the English language by implementing division-approved curriculum and monitoring student progress/activities/outcomes. The teacher provides methods to support and/or reinforce classroom goals in the home and provides a safe and optimal learning environment. The teacher develops appropriate lesson plans and instructional techniques, evaluates students’ level of English fluency, and provides feedback to the students, parents and administration.

Essential Functions:

  • Support ESL students through both a push-in and pull-our model to provide instructional skills, language and content objectives, knowledge of child growth and second-language development
  • Support ESL students in the knowledge and use of materials and resources in the division curriculum
  • Collaborate with other teachers in the school to develop instructional goals, objectives and methods for the students
  • Collaborate with other ESL teachers across the division to plan division-wide goals, objectives and methods for ESL students
  • Develop and maintain the physical environment of learning spaces that are conducive to effective learning
  • Serve as a liaison as needed between the student and other teachers to understand performance within the class and any issues that need to be addressed for success
  • Assist with the selection of instructional materials and equipment for use by ESL students
  • Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students, parents, and colleagues concerning bot the academic and behavioral progress of ESL students
  • Administer yearly assessments required as a part of the Virginia Assessment Program for ESL students.
  • Encourage family engagement/participation in school wide events
  • Participate in ESL-related professional learning activities
  • Participate in ESL department meetings with the Coordinator of Instruction
  • Encourage students to set and maintain high standards of classroom behavior, assists in upholding and enforcing school rules
  • Maintain and uphold school and school division policies and procedures
  • Maintain records as required by law, division policy and regulations
  • Strive for availability to students and families for education-related purposes within contractual commitments
  • Perform related duties ass assigned by the administration

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

Skills are required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions; apply pertinent policies, regulations and/or laws; planning and managing activities; preparing and maintain accurate records; and operating standard office equipment including pertinent software applications; knowledge of basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; knowledge of basic vocabulary of students entering the ESL program; read technical information; compose a variety of documents and/or facilitate group discussions; analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions; specific knowledge to satisfactorily apply appropriate codes, policies, regulations and/or laws, age appropriate activities, lesson plan requirements, community resources and stages of child development; ability to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events, gather, collate and/or classify data; use job-related equipment; flexibility to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; operate equipment using standardized methods; ability to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; independent interpretation of guidelines; problem solving with equipment; ability to establish and maintain constructive relationships; adapting to changing work priorities; maintaining confidentiality, exhibiting tact and patience; working flexible hours; ability to assist students with translation of language from the native language to English

Education and/or Experience:

The candidate must hold or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement in English as a Second Language. A Master’s degree, previous teaching experience and bilingual in English and/or Spanish, Farsi, Arabic and French are preferred.

Physical Conditions and Nature of Work:

Duties performed typically in school setting to include classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, light lifting, up to 40 pounds, and other limited physical activities are required. Occasional travel with student son field trips may be necessary. Instruction for Students with Disabilities may be necessary. Occasional lifting of equipment such as audio-visuals weighing up to 50 pounds may be required. Daily personal and close contact with children to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required. Regular contact with other stuff members and parents is required. Occasional contact with medical professionals may be required. Frequent contact with parents by phone, in writing and in person is necessary.

Evaluation:

The ESL teacher is evaluated by the Principal in consultation with the Coordinator of Instruction.

2021-22 School Year-Starting in January 2022
