Nature and Scope :

Under the direction of the Center Manager, the Pre-K Assistant Teacher will collaborate with the Pre-K Teacher to plan, administer and evaluate Pre-K and Early Learning Education Services. This position is primarily responsible for the implementation of YMCA’s Early Learning Pre-K program and for the successful achievement related to four-year old children. With support from Pre-K, Education and other Early Learning Service Areas, the Pre-K Assistant Teacher assist with providing quality instruction to Pre-K children that will enable them to learn and demonstrate mastery of Core Standards (GELDS) that will prepare them for kindergarten and school success.

Qualifications:

  • Must have an Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education and two years work experience with children ages 0-5.
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to work cooperatively as a member of a team with other staff members.
  • Must have some knowledge of project-based curriculums such as Creative Curriculum
  • Credentials must be verified in the Georgia Professional Development System (PDS) prior to applying for this position.
  • BFTS Satisfactory Comprehensive CRC
  • Must be able to work cooperatively as a member of a team and with other staff members.
  • Must demonstrate enthusiasm for working with Pre-K children.
  • Bilingual preferred but not required

Responsibilities :

  • Demonstrates enthusiasm for working with Pre-K students.
  • Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Model appropriate use of grammar (verbal and written) when communicating with students, parents, colleagues and program leadership.
  • Follows professional ethics in all work-related activities.
  • Avoids behavior which detracts from staff morale.
  • Communicates responsibly with students, parents, colleagues and program leadership.
  • Attends all required Pre-K Training.
  • Cooperatively works with lead teacher by providing content-related and age appropriate instruction based on Y-Early Learning Curriculum and Signature Programs.
  • Exhibits knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices for four and five-year olds.
  • Cooperatively works with lead teacher to account for students’ attendance, punctuality and records accurately in the roll book.
  • Follows the Operating Guidelines required by Bright from the Start.
  • Gather assessment data such as observational recordings, work samples, matrices for lead teacher to upload in WSO weekly.
  • Assume the role of lead teacher in the absence of the lead teacher.
  • Assist Lead Teacher in providing care and education for each child (e.g., changing diapers, setting up meals, keeping a detailed log of each child’s day, and keeping classroom organized and clean).
  • Assist lead teacher with documentation through photos, observations and teacher reflections.
  • Assist lead teacher with observations for individual portfolio assessments.
  • Assist lead teacher with parent-teacher conferences and home visits.
  • Assist lead teacher with updates to parent blog daily.
  • Participates in annual Open House and other family events at the school
  • Participates in professional development (a minimum of 15 hours per year is required.
  • Organizes classroom space into functional areas (interest centers) in collaboration with the lead teacher.
  • Maintains a clean and healthy classroom environment.
  • Maintains a safe environment – indoor and outdoor.
  • Keeps classroom arranged in an orderly manner and materials readily accessible to the children.
  • Provides constant supervision of children during all activities – indoors and outdoors.
  • Observes physical conditions of children and makes referrals to teacher when necessary.
  • Makes observations and assesses children in each developmental area using the designated developmental screening and on-going assessment process.
  • Refers children with suspected problems to teacher.
  • Gives input into the evaluation of each child’s progress on an on-going basis.
  • In collaboration with the teacher, prepares in advance lesson plans.
  • Ensures that the environment is clean, safe and organized.
  • Follows daily schedule in conducting activities that are appropriate for the individual developmental levels of all children.
  • Provides a variety of art media and allows for creative expressions.
  • Displays children’s work at eye level in the classroom, hallway, etc.
  • Conducts individual, small and large group activities.
  • Presents activities or concepts in sequential order.
  • Plans and participates in the provision of a balanced program of open learning and structured activities.
  • Communicates to the teacher the need for additional supplies.
  • Uses available community resources and in-house field trips for classroom enrichment.
  • Establishes classroom rules with teachers that are appropriate for age level of the child.
  • Maintains order in the classroom using positive approaches to behavioral management.
  • Provides for smooth transition from one activity to another activity.
  • Meets all job-related federal, state, local and program regulations and timelines for compliance, implementation and documentation.
  • Submits the accurate attendance for ChildPlus and other applicable reports along with a copy of the page from the roll book with tabulated attendance for the month prior to the third day of the following month.
  • Counts, records and submits accurate meal count reports daily after each meal for the number of children eating to the food service staff.
  • Serves as a bus monitor, attends required trainings and meetings and assists in other program areas as deemed necessary by the Center Manager.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Ergonomics : Sitting, bending, stooping, standing, running, 15% repetitive keyboard work, seeing, verbal communications, lifts up to 25 pounds.

Pay: $16.54 - $18.75 per hour
