Position Description:
Chena Hot Springs Resort is a beautiful place to work in interior Alaska. There are three greenhouse that operate all-year-round, with the main greenhouse being completely hydroponic. The Assistant Greenhouse Manager will work closely with the Greenhouse Manager to oversee the floral, vegetable, and fruit production of the resort, which allows candidates to gain experience in a wide variety of categories, including floral production, landscape design, vegetable production, hydroponics, agriculture, and more. This position is full-time and year-round, and offers excellent growth opportunities in the company.
Responsibilities:
The position will be to support the greenhouse manager in the production of year-round hydroponic crops, a large summer floral crop, and summer vegetable production.
All produce grown is used on-site to supply employees and guests at the resort with fresh meals.
Maintain year-round hydroponic lettuce, basil, and Thai basil crop, including harvesting, cleaning trays, mixing fertilizer and seeding.
Maintain an eleven-month hydroponic tomato crop including harvesting, pollinating, trellising, pruning, and grafting.
Maintain one main 6000 sq ft greenhouse, one 1000 sq ft hoop-house, and one 2000 sq ft high tunnel. This includes sweeping, mopping, washing pots, PVC piping repair, minor construction.
Propagate a large floral crop for outdoor landscaping during the summer months from seed and cuttings. Summer work includes transplanting, watering, tilling, composting, weeding, and planting.
Assist the greenhouse manager in training, managing, and mentoring employees.
Assist the greenhouse manager in improving or developing systems for increased production and productivity, and drafting SOPs and other training materials.
Assist the greenhouse manager in planning, organizing, and implementing the production and planting schedule
Help foster a healthy work environment where employees feel respected and heard.
Assist the manager during the plant out season—the greenhouse produces flowers for over 200 baskets and planters and several beds each year as well vegetables for 3 plots and maintains a perennial berry patch.

Required Experience and Education:
An education in horticulture, agriculture, or a related field, or equivalent greenhouse, agriculture, or horticulture experience.
Alaska pesticide applicators license or ability to obtain one with one within a designated time period.
Ability to lift up to 70lbs (lifting harvest buckets, trays, supplies, tomato plants).
Ability to work on a ladder with arms extended above your head for long periods.
Willingness and ability to mix fertilizers, acid for pH adjustment and apply pesticides (including herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and traps).
Ability and willingness to use hand tools to make common repairs and modifications, and for garden cultivation.
Ability to work on the ground (kneeling) for long periods for plant out, weeding, and other situations as necessary.
Willingness to work and live on-site at a semi-remote location in Alaska year-round with an understanding that this can mean interrupted and limited phone and internet service.
Ability to operate a four-wheeler and small tractor with implements, or the ability and willingness to learn how.
Preferred Experience and Education:
Greenhouse or nursery work experience producing vegetables or ornamental plants. Experience with hydroponic lettuce or tomato production is desirable.
Experience managing a team, preferably in a greenhouse, agricultural, or horticultural position.
Knowledge of and interest in hydroponics and soil crop production systems, fertilizer application, pest control and other aspects of greenhouse and field production.
Experience with minor plumbing, electrical, and equipment maintenance a plus.
Pay and Compensation:
Pay starts at $15/hr., but may be more DOE
