Job Description
Scientist I- Bioinformatics
We are seeking a highly motivated Bioinformatist I to join our team at Silver Spring, MD. The ideal candidate will effectively interpret and analyze data for bioinformatics leadership, provide comprehensive project reports, and contribute to the development of innovative solutions using theoretical expertise and new technologies. This role involves manipulating genomic databases, assisting in instructional courses, and developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in collaboration with bioinformatics leadership. If you have a background in Biology, Microbiology, Virology, or Computer Science, with 1-3 years of bioinformatics experience and proficiency in next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies, we encourage you to apply.
Compensation & Benefits:
Estimated Starting Salary Range for Scientist I- Bioinformatics : $75k-82k
Pay commensurate with experience.
Full time benefits include Medical, Dental, Vision, 401K, and other possible benefits as provided. Benefits are subject to change with or without notice.
Scientist I- Bioinformatics Responsibilities Include:
  • Effectively interprets and analyzes data for bioinformatics leadership.
  • Provides comprehensive project reports on a timely basis to the bioinformatics and molecular laboratory leadership.
  • Submits reports and data summaries required to prepare research results for presentation and publication in the scientific literature.
  • Applies theoretical expertise and innovation to apply new technology.
  • Tests and documents software, hardware and interface requirements.
  • Analyzes bioinformatics problems to develop solutions involving computer hardware and software.
  • Manipulate publicly accessible, commercial, or proprietary genomic, clinical-related databases.
  • Attends relevant seminars, scientific conferences, and meetings for the MRSN.
  • Assist in the instruction and execution of next-generation sequencing (NGS) teaching courses offered by the MRSN.
  • Develops Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), templates and forms (including, but not limited to, statistical programming plan SOP and template) for bioinformatics team in collaboration with the Bioinformatics leadership.
  • Maintains a safe workplace, and observes and complies with appropriate safety and occupational health rules and regulations. Required to attend safety training relative to position and report any infractions of safety procedures to the facility Safety Officer.
  • Shares knowledge in effort to advance staff/team capabilities.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned
Scientist I- Bioinformatics Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested:
  • M.S., B.A. or B.S. in Biology, Microbiology, Virology, Computer Science, Computational Biology.
  • 1-3 years bioinformatics experience working with bacterial genomes, antibiotic resistance and mobile genetic elements
  • Possess basic knowledge of next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies, including short and long read sequencing using the Illumina, Pacific biosciences, and Oxford Nanopore instruments.
  • Possess basic or introductory knowledge and experience analyzing, manipulating and interpreting long and short-read DNA sequences from bacteria.
  • Possess introductory knowledge and experience writing scripts in languages such as Perl, in environment shells such as bash, and common software packages for high content data analysis such as R.
  • Ability to work on the command line, bash scripting.
  • Ability to perform knowledge engineering functions between the IT-based staff and the medical research science staff.
  • Ability to perform and assist with technical planning, design, development, testing, implementation, and management of internet technologies.
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal
