Pharmacy Technician
REPORTS TO: Pharmacy Manager (Retail)
POSITION SUMMARY:
Assists the pharmacists with delivering quality healthcare to patients/customers by providing prompt, friendly customer service. Learns to complete all prescription dispensing and other assigned technician duties efficiently and independently. Takes initiative in their technician training course to achieve certification within one year of hire. Seeks out opportunities to assist patients and coworkers with day-to-day operations in the pharmacy. Exemplifies professionalism in the workplace with each patient interaction.
SCHEDULE: Full-time Benefited, 40 hours weekly
Requirements
Education:
  • Required: High School diploma or GED equivalent
License/Registration/Certification:
  • Required: National Pharmacy Technician Certification, must maintain licensure
  • Required: Valid Iowa drivers license
Experience:
  • Required: Previous pharmacy technician or tech-in-training experience
  • Preferred: Experience in operating a cash register
  • Preferred: Customer service experience
  • Preferred: Experience in operating computers and various software programs
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, policies, procedures, and guidelines established by professional organizations and/or governing agencies.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, statutes, regulations, codes, and standards related to the area of responsibility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting care, concern and patience in all customer interactions.
  • Arrive at work on time and remain on task.
  • Dresses business professional, following all dress code regulations as set forth by the overseeing corporation.
  • Work weekends on a rotating schedule determined by the pharmacy scheduler.
  • Makes every effort to learn customers by name and address them as such.
  • Answers the telephone promptly and provides thorough friendly, helpful service.
  • Manages inventory control procedures including ordering, checking in, and putting away pharmacy and retail orders.
  • Manages additional inventory procedures including pulling outdates and returning recalled and expired drugs monthly to wholesaler or reverse distributors and as needed.
  • Assists in resolving pricing discrepancies for retail sales when necessary.
  • Follows all legal prescription processing procedures involved in the data entry, dispensing, packaging, and sale of prescription medications as outlined in the Iowa Pharmacy Law Manual.
  • Processies refill orders.
  • Pays attention to all notes on prescriptions and follows directions accordingly.
  • Fills and maintains nursing home medications orders and cassettes/bubble packs and prepares them for delivery on time based on refill promise times and routine exchange schedule.
  • Maintains ownership of the dispill functions every day and stays up to date with patient med changes and repackaging medications for patients when necessary.
  • Maintains cleanliness at assigned station each day including but not limited to taking out the trash and shred, disinfecting all countertops and counting trays/spatulas, filing all paperwork, and making sure the workstation is ready for the next shift.
  • Assists the PSPs to help patients at the POS station or drive-up and gather all requested prescription refills as able and complete the sale with the patient.
  • Operates the cash register accurately and scans products and reports when items are not scanning properly. Counts down the registers daily and follows accurate money-handling policies and procedures.
  • Delivers medications to patients or nursing facilities when needed.
  • Reviews, comprehends, and communicates customer charge account statement information.
  • Notifies the pharmacist when a patient requires a consult.
  • Scans in all POS signature receipts and all delivery sheets.
  • Bags and hangs prescription medications in Will Call in alphabetical order.
  • Completes training on the ice cream shop and serves customers on demand when a PSP is not available.
  • Trains on and maintains in store, all sanitary and cleaning regulations required by state and federal authorities in regards to safe food-handling.
  • Assists with other pharmacy and retail duties as assigned.
  • Wears a visible identification badge while on duty that clearly identifies the employee as a pharmacy technician and that includes at least the technician's first name.
  • Complies with all state and federal pharmacy regulations.
  • Maintains HIPAA compliance and adheres to privacy practices for our patient protected health information.
