Chesterfield County Public Schools is Hiring a Physical education teacher Near Colonial Heights, VA

General Description

  • Position is responsible for creating a classroom environment that fosters, promotes and develops an understanding of the relationship of healthy body function and exercise;
  • that motivates each student to cultivate physical fitness, and appropriate social and emotional adjustment; that discovers and develop the talents of students in physical achievement;

and that develops strength, skill, agility, poise, and coordination in individual, dual and team physical activities and sports, in accordance with each student’s ability.

Essential Job Functions

Essential Job Functions :

Teaches and demonstrates as required, knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance, and individual, dual or team sports, utilizing curriculum designated by CCPSchools and other appropriate learning activities.

Collaborates with other faculty in planning and delivering instruction to the students.

Develops lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the division’s basic instructional philosophy and congruent with course and SOL standards;

provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students.

Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas.

Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of students.

Assesses student learning on an ongoing basis and alters instruction to meet group / individual needs.

Maintains control of storage and use of school property.

Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress.

Administers testing in accordance with division testing practices.

Participates in various student and parent activities which occur in school including PTA, student clubs and after-school activities.

Models non discriminatory practices in all activities.

Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence.

Performs other work as assigned.

  • Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone;
  • speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height;

and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment :

The employee regularly works in a school setting. The noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderate.

Qualifications

Working knowledge of the concepts, principles and methodologies of instruction. Working knowledge of academic curriculum for assigned classes.

Demonstrated skill in the use of computer technology as a tool for teaching, learning, research, and communication. Demonstrated ability to develop instructional goals, to design and deliver instruction and to assess students’ learning.

Demonstrated ability to analyze student needs and provide program activities consistent with those needs. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of personnel and students.

Requirements

Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with endorsements in Health and Physical Education. Valid First Aid, CPR & AED certification preferred.

To be eligible you must have completed one of the following :

Completed a state-approved teacher preparation program in Health & Physical Education (or Career Switcher Program in Health & Physical Education )

Completed a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution along with a passing Praxis exam in Health & Physical Education 5857

A bachelor's degree specific to Health & Physical Education

Hold a valid out-of-state license with a comparable endorsement

Both undergraduate and graduate transcripts must be submitted. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.

References

Applicants must submit two (2) references as a part of their application package. Applicants with zero years teaching experience should submit references from their cooperating teacher and university supervisor.

Applicants with recent teaching experience must provide references from principals and / or superintendents from all contracted teaching experiences within the past three (3) years.

If experience is not within the past three (3) years, references from the last contracted work experience should be provided.

Applicants without direct classroom teaching experience should submit (2) references from the current employer, including one supervisory reference.
