Our Opportunity:

Chewy is hiring a Principal Software Engineer to join our team in Bellevue, WA and work on Discovery Technology team. This is a unique opportunity to join a small engineering team (<50) and shape core components of Chewy's storefront, the primary driver of revenue for a $10Bn company. The Discovery team is responsible for aiding customers in finding the right products in their shopping experience through searching, browsing, and delivering relevant, personalized recommendations. Since inception 2 years ago, this team has a significant impact on both the customer shopping experience as well as Chewy business results. As a senior member of the team, you will shape the next generation of Chewy storefront software systems and enable teams of engineers to deliver on product & business goals through platform design, development and implementation. You will lead the charge in hands-on iterative development, testing, and operational excellence. You'll drive the process improvements that will accelerate and raise the bar for other engineers at Chewy. As one of a small number of Principal Engineers at Chewy, you will have a seat at the table for high-impact decisions and initiatives undertaken by the company, giving you a front row seat to shape Chewy's growth and the systems that support that growth.

To be successful in the role, you will need a proven track record of being a disruptor, innovator, and forward-looking engineer. Your role balances the need to operate at depth, understanding the details of the organization's product goals, as well as being able to "zoom out" to connect the dots across the technology stack. The successful candidate will partner with both technical and business teams on multiple initiatives and collaborate to deliver new features and enhancements. The role will have visibility in the product, technology & business organizations of Chewy.

What You'll Do:

  • You will have responsibility over major components of Chewy's recommendation architecture and platform - both development and operational needs. You will be the engineering leader for components of our platform
  • Apply vision, strategy, and thought leadership to impact Chewy, at scale
  • Evolve and grow world-class Chewy search experience, serving billions of recommendations
  • Immerse yourself in imagining and providing cutting-edge solutions to build high-performance, low-latency web and mobile-web experiences
  • Have a relentless focus on scalability, latency, performance robustness, and cost trade-offs -- especially those present in highly virtualized, elastic, cloud-based environments
  • Apply rigorous analysis to connect the dots between issues affecting customer experience and necessary iterative improvements and feature development of our systems
  • Develop and lead a team culture of 24/7 operational excellence for our applications and services
  • Work with Engineering Leadership to drive best practices in software development, testing, and deployment
  • Hire, train, and mentor other engineers on the team

What You'll Need:

  • 10 years of experience designing, building, deploying, operating, scaling, and evolving distributed systems and high-volume transaction application in a 24/7 environment
  • 5 years builds systems at scale on AWS technology stack
  • 3 years of industry experience in full-stack software development with Javascript, Typescript, React, or Next.js
  • Must possess a bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent work experience
  • Passion for optimizing complex, cloud-based software systems
  • Solid communication skills and ability to function as a leader that serves the team are critical
  • Experience in Kanban/Agile development process
  • Experience in linking ML Model production pipelines with orchestration-layer and presentation-layer systems
  • Position will require travel between Bellevue and Boston at least once per calendar year
