Position Overview

Windy City Harvest, the urban agriculture division of the Chicago Botanic Garden, delivers the transformative benefits of growing, consuming, and sharing food locally. Our primary location is Farm on Ogden, a community hub and training center in the North Lawndale neighborhood of Chicago, with 10-plus additional farm sites on the West and South Sides of Chicago. Windy City Harvest grows and distributes 100,000 pounds of produce annually and reaches more than 2,000 participants per year with programs focused on urban agriculture training and community food access. Responsibilities:

In this role you will be responsible for the following:

  • Greets customers, provides friendly and effective customer service by demonstrating respect, patience, and sincerity to all customers.
  • Conducts the market’s opening and/or closing procedures.
  • Process customer transactions quickly and accurately.
  • Bags all customers transactions safely, respectfully, and with attention to the customer's needs.
  • Helps customers select products, answer questions, and shares product information.
  • Communicates new and ongoing special programs and promotions to customers.
  • Informs customers on all forms of accepted payment.
  • Communicate the importance of food assistance programs to our shoppers, vendors, farmers, and community members.
  • Proactively monitors for and conducts facing of products and sweeps market when needed.
  • Completes daily paperwork and cash deposits.
  • Stocks and reconciles inventory of produce, plants, and merchandise.
  • Ensures all signage, displays and marketing material are up to date and consistent with the Chicago Botanic Garden aesthetic.
  • Reports all product ordering and quality issues to the sales manager.
  • Serves as backup for ordering products once a week.
  • Occasionally attends local farmers’ and pop-up markets.
  • Empties and cleans produce refrigerators as needed.

Qualifications

Our ideal candidate will have the following:

At least one year retail customer service experience required; grocery store preferred

  • Bilingual/Spanish required
  • Detail oriented, flexible, and able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Mission-driven and able to uphold Windy City Harvest values statement
  • Familiarity with POS (point of sale) systems and the ability to learn new technologies
  • Demonstrates excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule
  • Collaborates well with market team and has strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to upsell

Physical Demands:

Some requirements for lifting, pushing, or pulling items up to 50 pounds, able to work in all weather conditions, and within walk-in cooler temperatures. Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, listening, speaking, and keyboarding. Use of office equipment including computers, telephones, copiers, and scanners.
