Job Summary
The Chief of Staff will report directly to the University President to support the President in leading a variety of institutional projects, as well as manage high-profile initiatives. The role will work closely with the executive leadership team to implement the President's vision for the institution and to manage priorities towards the advancement of the University's Strategic Plan. The Chief of Staff will serve as a liaison to university faculty and staff, as well as to external stakeholders, with a particular emphasis on representation for processes that cut across divisional portfolios within the university. The Chief of Staff will also provide leadership and operational oversight for the Office of the President, connecting day-to-day processes and activities of the office to the university's longer-term strategic goals and objectives.
Job Description
  • Counsels the President, and provides a sounding board and advice on sensitive matters, all to ensure that the President has the information necessary to make informed decisions
  • Advance and manage university-wide initiatives to support the President's vision, including special projects
  • Builds and nurtures internal and external relationships to serve as a resource for the President and as a point of contact for key constituents
  • Prioritize, communicate, and drive cross-divisional collaboration towards priorities of the President
  • Leads and participates in key internal and external meetings as the President's representative among stakeholders and organizations
  • Identify and act on opportunities, challenges, and barriers to organizational success
  • Serve as the secondary writer for executive correspondence, including but not limited to public addresses (speeches, talking points, remarks, published letters, etc.)
  • Collaborate with the External Affairs team to ensure that executive-level communications appropriately reflect the President's voice, tone, and goals
  • Assist the President with issues and subject matters in ways that sometimes requires considerable sensitivity, discretion, judgment, and/or negotiation
  • Provide oversight on the President's schedule
  • Supervise the work of the Deputy Chief of Staff and provide leadership guidance to support professional development
  • Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree or other advanced degree
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership experience in a relevant field (administration, project management, or other related fields)
  • Proven track record in the following listed knowledge, skills and abilities
Preferred Qualifications
Experience providing senior executive-level support within an institution of higher education
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge:
  • Technical expertise sufficient to plan, organize, direct, implement, and explain complex programs and practices
  • Strategic and rapid communications, with the ability to respond nimbly during public meetings and other spontaneous settings
  • Public policies, funding mechanisms, and roles of federal, state, and local government relating to higher education oversight
  • Translating strategic thinking into action plans and output
Skills:
  • Provides excellent judgment, diplomacy, and a robust understanding of issues to support the President
  • Negotiations and resolving conflict
  • Strategic short- and long-term project planning
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Assessment of cost-benefit for major decisions
  • Excellent written communication skills, with proven written assets relating to professional correspondence and speechwriting
