Compensation: Starting at $50,000 annually

Summary: This position is responsible for managing the financial operations of the Children’s Museum of Phoenix, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and compliance with accounting standards and regulations. The Accounting Manager plays a pivotal role in financial planning, budgeting, and reporting to support the organization's mission and objectives. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned to meet business needs.

  • Financial Management: Develop and maintain the organization's financial policies and procedures; manage day-to-day financial operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger; and oversee the processing of financial transactions maintaining accurate financial records. 

  • Budgeting and Forecasting: Collaborate with CFO to create annual budgets and financial forecasts and monitor budget performance; provide regular reports to management, highlighting variances and recommending corrective actions; and create grant budgets working with stakeholders. 

  • Financial Reporting: Prepare accurate financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements, monthly and generate financial reports for board meetings.

  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and regulations, including GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) specific to nonprofits; manage the organization's tax-exempt status and coordinate with external auditors for annual audits; Form 990 filings, and other compliance-related activities. 

  • Grant and Donor Reporting: Maintain records of grants, donations, and restricted funds; and prepare financial reports for grantors and donors, ensuring funds are used in accordance with donor restrictions. 

  • Financial Analysis: Conduct financial analysis to identify trends, financial risks, and opportunities; and provide recommendations for improving financial performance and sustainability. 

  • Cash Flow Management: Monitor cash flow to ensure the organization can meet its financial obligations and implement cash management strategies to optimize liquidity. 

  • Team Leadership: Supervise and mentor accounting staff; foster a collaborative and productive work environment within the finance department; and provide support, training and exceptional customer service to other departments that interact with the finance team. 

  • Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in financial processes while taking into consideration nonprofit resource constraints; and implement and streamline nonprofit-specific accounting procedures to improve accuracy and reduce operational risks. 

  • Financial Software Management 

  • Any additional responsibilities as assigned by the CFO, ensuring a nonprofit lens in project planning and execution, contributing to cross-functional initiatives that support the museum's nonprofit mission and objectives. 

 

Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting; CPA or relevant professional certification is preferred. 

  • Several years of accounting and financial management experience, with a significant portion in the nonprofit sector. 

  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, regulations, and compliance requirements. 

  • Proficiency in accounting software and financial management tools.

  • Excellent analytical, communication, and leadership skills. 

  • Attention to detail and the ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines.

Salary/ Benefits:

Language Skills:

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing. Spanish speaking and/or other foreign language skills a plus. 

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have experience with Microsoft 365 (especially Excel) and feel comfortable with technology in performing job duties. Candidate will be required to become proficient in Financial Edge, Blackbaud Altru, and Paycom through training and usage to successfully meet departmental responsibilities.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Environmental Requirements: 

Must be able to work in a well-lighted, temperature-controlled work area, with constant ambient noise levels. Must be able to work in open area with other employees.
