Chinatown Community Development Center is Hiring a Tour Guide Intern Near San Francisco, CA

Job SummaryChinatown Alleyway Tours Interns are individuals who are interested in learning about the alleyways in Chinatown. The tour audience will vary from middle and high school students to community organizations, leaders, and individuals. Interns will be trained in public speaking and presentation skills, as well as the history of Chinatown and its alleyways. This is an opportunity to educate individuals on the rich stories, history and significance of Chinatown, San Francisco and Asian American history, as well as to develop youth leadership in our community.
Chinatown Alleyway Tours seeks individuals who are committed to the Chinatown community, want to develop their public speaking skills, and are excited to lead tours of Chinatown in the future.
Training Opportunity and Skills Development: Chinatown Alleyway Tours (CATs) is aiming to train and educate the present and future youth leaders of our community through the internship experience. Guides will be given a mentor and will be trained in two types of public speaking—workshop/presentation skills and skills to handle different types of personalities and scenarios encountered on a tour. Guides will have the opportunities to attend trainings, workshops, and facilitate meetings. While Interns are gaining insights about the rich significance of Chinatown, San Francisco, and Asian American History, our Tour Guides and Senior Tour Guides will be leading tours, mentoring younger members, and developing essential skills in outreach, marketing and material research.
Time CommitmentThe Intern position is a one-year commitment. Initial trainings and rehearsals last a total of 10-15 hours. Tour development and program assistance lasts 0-5 hours per week. Attendance at monthly CATs meeting the second Saturday of every month is mandatory. During the school year, we may have occasional weekday tours and may take 2-3 hours per week. During the summer, tours and tour development time increases to 6-15 hours per week. Tours take place on weekdays and weekends and hours are flexible. In addition, there is an option to perform additional administrative tasks in the office.
Purpose Of The TourThe tour is an opportunity to educate others about the rich stories, history and significance of Chinatown, San Francisco, and Asian American history. We hope to expand the one-dimensional image that many have about Chinatown as a tourist trap or a dirty, crowded neighborhood. The tours present the stories, struggles, and achievements of our community. In addition, the tour is part of CATs’ program to train and educate the present and future youth leaders of our community.
