Job Summary and Qualifications
Coordinates all aspects of the facility infection control program. Directly involved with programs that prevent and control healthcare-acquired infections. Serves as an infection control consultant for facility leadership and staff. Interacts and works collaboratively with physicians, outside agencies, corporate/divisional staff as well as all departments within the facility
- Demonstrates effective leadership skills of delegation, organization, and coordination of system activities and integration with ICP team, Quality and Risk leadership, and Hospital colleagues.
- Develops and implements a surveillance plan, reviewed on at least an annual basis and approved by the designated Infection Control Committee. Conducts on-going surveillance and documentation of infections in patients and personnel utilizing priority-directed, targeted surveillance method. Compiles and presents surveillance reports to the designated Infection Control Committee; shares data with other appropriate medical staff and/or hospital committees and departments.
- Collects and analytically interprets infection data based on NHSN data and rates. Develops and implements risk-reduction plans for nosocomial infections.
- Inspects environment (EOC) and observes personnel activities for the purpose of detecting possible infection hazards and to evaluate compliance with hospital infection control policies.
- Actively participates in antibiotic stewardship program.
- Monitors patient admissions and placement to assure optimum control of infection through appropriate placement.
- Refers unresolved questions or problems to the Chief Medical Officer and/or other Service Chiefs who will provide consultative advice and/or call a committee meeting if necessary. Conducts special studies as directed by the Medical Executive Staff or designated Infection Control Committee.
- Reports all in-house patients with communicable diseases to the county and/or state health department and maintains records.
- Disseminates information relative to infection control and implements infection control measures recommended by the designated Infection Control Committee. Conducts / coordinates educational programs relevant to infection control as necessary and/or mandated or recommended by CDC and other regulatory agencies.
- Develops and implements all mandatory standards/programs/and regulations relevant to infection control. Prepares plans for mandatory compliance with regulatory agencies (OSHA: Blood borne Pathogen, TB prevention and control) and presents to the designated Infection Control Committee.
- Collaborates with outside vendors and all departments affected by implementation and education of new equipment relative to infection control. Communicates recommendations for utilization of space, equipment, and other resources as needed to meet patient, employee, and system needs relevant to IC.
- Develops and implements policies/procedures/hospital-wide plans for federal and local government mandates relevant to Infection Control.
EXPERIENCE
- Required: 3 to 5 years of experience in an acute care setting performing infection prevention work, Has knowledge and experience in patient care practices, microbiology, aseptic technique, disinfection/sterilization, adult education, infectious diseases, communication, program administration, and epidemiology.
- Knowledge and experience with regulatory, survey compliance related to infection prevention Relationship builder, comfortable with visibility in all care areas
- Flexibility work day and ability to manage multiple evolving issues and priorities (from routine projects to unexpected events) to meet organizational needs
- Solid written and verbal communication skills including simplifying complex requirements for leadership and staff focus
- Computer skills including Excel, PowerPoint, navigation of NHSN site
- Preferred: Use of various improvement methodologies and change management strategies Proven ICP team management skills
EDUCATION
- Required: Bachelors degree in healthcare or related field; typically a registered nurse (RN), physician, epidemiologist, or medical technologist (MT).
