Paralegal- Mass Torts: SUMMARY OF ROLE:

Responsible for providing assistance to attorneys who handle high volume tort claims that could last 5 years. This is accomplished by providing clerical and research support through client interactions, gathering important case information, interviews, and necessary documentation to help move the cases forward. This position provides attorneys with efficient intermittent support. This position involves providing a sense of safety and building relationships with victims of sexual abuse and clients suffering from terminal illnesses. Trauma-informed communication skills and the ability to regulate emotions while handling disturbing content, such as childhood sexual abuse and stories of cancer and other debilitating illnesses, are a must.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:

  • Handles high volume of incoming and outgoing calls, mails, emails, faxes, and other client case communication and inquiries. Appropriately resolves questions in an efficient manner.
  • Reviews received client information, determines importance, and summarizes and/or distributes contents to the appropriate person. Maintains a meticulous record of case activity.
  • Exposed to client records that may contain explicit, graphic descriptions of various traumatic events.
  • Maintains positive relations with all clients and other team members while conducting comprehensive, detailed oriented interviews with clients and other concerned parties.
  • Schedules and attends meetings, taking notes and creating documentation.
  • Gathers ancillary documents, such as medical records and other case specific requirements.
  • Follows firm communication guidelines and procedures under minimal supervision.
  • Facilitates communication between attorney and clients, learning and translating “legalese”, while providing exceptional trauma-informed communication to clients and building ongoing client rapport.
  • Maintains all clients’ case records and documents day to day in the execution of duties.
  • Performs computer typing, transcriptions, language translations, and filing duties as required.
  • Triages and performs other related and time sensitive duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Appropriate level of administrative and paralegal experience and skills.
  • Effective communication skills with employees at all levels.
  • Excellent organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to organize, plan and prioritize multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work autonomously and understand when an attorney or manager needs to be involved in decision making.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and to exercise discretion and good judgment.
  • Sensitivity to problems or challenges: the ability to identify when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong, with the skill to effectively communicate with clients in a professional, consultative, and compassionate manner.
  • Comfortable working with graphic explicit trauma-informed records, correspondence, and the ability to adapt while maintaining a professional dialogue with attorneys, clients, and avoid confrontational conversations. Deductive reasoning: the ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce sensible and reasonable answers.
  • Oral comprehension: the ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through written and verbal communication.
  • Effective decision making: the ability to analyze information, evaluate results, and implement the best solution to solve problems or challenges.
  • Self-motivated with a dedication to keeping up to date professionally and applying new knowledge to the job.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree or paralegal certificate.
  • 1-2 years of senior customer service or paralegal experience or the equivalent combination of education and on the job experience.
  • Highly efficient with computers, computer software (Microsoft Office applications Excel, Word), and with a keystroke at least 65 wpm.
  • Knowledge and experience with other relevant forms of data technology, including the use of email and case management software or other data input software.
  • Ability to successfully pass a background check and other pre-employment screening.

ADDITIONAL DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bilingual English/ Spanish
  • Social work or legal advocacy experience
  • Previous Mass Tort experience a plus.
