Summary:

Position may be based in Anchorage, Homer, or Seward, AK.

This position is responsible for planning, developing, implementing, and administering high-quality EMS training programs and training standards for Chugachmiut’s Community Health Aides, clinic staff, and regional community members. The EMS Training Officer will collaborate with the regional village councils to develop community-level first responder groups in all regional communities, provide and facilitate continuous engagement of EMS groups, and coordinate ongoing training and certification maintenance for CHAs, medical staff, community members, and EMS teams.
Under guidance from the Health Services Operations Director, Medical Director, and CHAP Director, the EMS Training Officer is responsible for the overall EMS readiness and training of CHAs and community first responders. This position is also responsible for ordering and maintaining all needed EMS equipment, training equipment, supplies, and materials in collaboration with the tribal councils and Inventory Control Specialist.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Creates, develops, and nurtures culturally appropriate interactions and connections with each other, Community Health Aides, First Responders, and community members.
  • Identify, create, and maintain meaningful relationships with stakeholders and organizations that can help facilitate positive educational outcomes. Specifically, identify and work with regional partners, including local schools, Health Aides, tribal councils, and others, that can provide learning spaces and advertise/recruit to promote engagement and attendance.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining teaching materials for all levels of State of Alaska ETT/EMT training, community-level first aid/CPR training, BLS training for healthcare providers, and other requested educational materials. Educational programs will be developed following the guidelines set by the certifying bodies and will adhere to best practices and guidelines set out in the State of Alaska Methods of Instruction course and CPR training certifying bodies.
  • Responsible for and working in collaboration with village councils to engage, develop, and maintain community-level first responder groups.
  • Integrates quality, safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness factors in planning, delivering, monitoring, and evaluating educational offerings, promoting the most effective and efficient use of human and financial resources.
  • Train, familiarize, and utilize all relevant software systems necessary to schedule, manage, and process courses, attendees, and continuing education for all new and renewal certifications.
  • Utilizes tracking systems or other databases to track, monitor, and assure the appropriate CME for continued certification for staff and community members. Utilizes other software packages and applications for ordering, scheduling, and tracking equipment and education needs.
  • Works closely with our tribal healthcare partners across the state to maintain certifications and remain up to date with curriculum or scope of practice changes to educational offerings for emergency services. Acts as a liaison between Chugachmiut and the State EMS office as needed and directed.
  • Creates rapport within the integrated care team and members of the organization.
  • Coach/mentor all clinical team members to build skills, capability, and competency.
  • Interacts with and contributes to the professional development of peers and community-based EMS provider teams.
  • Provide high-quality educational services through a variety of platforms to meet the need, including in person or via teleconference as needed for CHAs and community EMS responders.
  • Educates staff and community partners in a wide variety of healthcare subjects such as prevention, first aid, emergency services, stabilization, and transport.
  • Travels to remote village clinics as needed to provide in-person education to staff and community members on a regular basis.
  • Effectively communicates with staff and community members in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Assists with Performance Improvement initiatives and Strategic Plan Goals.
  • Serves as the resource for emergency training, EMS training, and BLS/First Aid training for Chugachmiut Health Services and others within the organization as requested.
  • Initiates and develops in-service training to keep Health Services staff updated on issues pertaining to emergency response, medivac coordination and preparation, and training on new equipment, processes, and procedures related to emergency response, either in the community or in the clinic.
  • Attends and participates in clinical service team meetings, staff meetings, and other committee efforts as appropriate.
  • Develops and prepares education materials as needed.
  • As requested, participate in and/or provide education opportunities for beneficiaries and communities in conjunction with other Chugachmiut staff. Activities may include providing health education and screening services at schools, health events, and other community events.
  • Complies with all Chugachmiut personnel and Health Services Division policies, licensed provider policies, regulations, and guidelines for patient care and maintains credentials in good standing and appropriate to the level of practice.
  • Complies with statutes and regulations from the State of Alaska, depending on level of certification.
  • Conforms to safety policies and general housekeeping practices.
  • Demonstrates sound work ethic, flexible, and shows dedication to the position.
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude, is respectful, and possesses cultural awareness and sensitivity toward patients and co-workers.

Education Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • State of Alaska Certified EMT II or higher or Nationally Registered AEMT or higher required
  • Current BLS certification required
  • Minimum of 2 years experience with Advanced Life Support EMS required
  • Valid Alaska Drivers License required with the ability to be added to Chugachmiut’s approved drivers list
  • Bachelor’s degree in health or EMS related field preferred
  • State of Alaska Advanced EMS Instructor Certification preferred.
  • Current BLS instructor preferred.
  • Experience in rural health care setting preferred
  • Experience in tribal health setting preferred
  • Experience with EMS Training both in person and via Zoom, preferred

Hours of Work:

Hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with an hour for lunch. This is a full-time position working 37.5 hours per week and 1950 hours per year. Chugachmiut maintains a drug/alcohol free and non-smoking environment.
