What You’ll Be Doing

The Director will be responsible for the origination, structuring and distribution of underwritten and arranged syndicated credits within identified industry portfolios in the corporate bank’s loan portfolio in the US. Consideration of overall Corporate Banking goals, including capital efficiency and maximized loan profitability, will be paramount. The Director will participate in the development and execution of overall business strategies.

The successful candidate will be flexible to work hours as needed to help deliver a great client experience, which may include evenings and weekends.

How You’ll Succeed

  • Focus on business strategy that supports Corporate Banking business plan that will result in prudent growth consistent with Capital Markets strategy
  • Effective coverage of both Investor, including bank and non-bank, and Corporate Banking issuer clients for syndicated credit facilities, maintain strong relationships with participants across the loan markets
  • Monitor primary loan and other debt capital markets conditions, structural and price trends, investor behavior and other financial market metrics and incorporate same into financing proposals for issuers as well as communicate these effectively both to internal and external clients
  • Structure and effectively syndicate underwritten and arranged loan transactions for US Corporate Banking clients with a primary focus on optimizing execution, minimizing market risk, maximizing the associated returns, giving consideration to increasing ancillary revenue earning potential from key Global Investment Banking, Global Markets and other CIBC relationships and serving the client’s best interests
  • Monitor secondary loan market trends and engage in secondary loan market purchases and sales in order to optimize capital efficiency, maximize profitability of the loan product, and manage risk
  • Support the origination, structuring and delivery of appropriate credit products, obtaining approvals as per Policy
  • Coordinate activities and relationships with other business areas across the firm
  • Provide valuable and timely market insight inclusive to pricing and structure in the US market to syndication partners in Canada and US Commercial lending
  • Develop and enhance business partnerships between CB and Credit Risk Management teams
  • Ensure that recommendations and opinions offered to clients are in compliance with legislation, are of the highest professional standards and that they reflect the judgment of the firm. Be familiar with appropriate due diligence criteria and effectively conduct such analysis and enquiry investigation to provide CIBC Capital Markets with an appropriate “due diligence” defense under applicable securities legislation
  • Work effectively within CIBC's corporate governance practices and policies (e.g., Risk Management, Finance, Human Resources, Legal and Compliance) to ensure all potential risks are appropriately addressed and that CIBC legal/reputational issues and shareholder objectives are covered
  • Develop a personal profile within the firm and assist in maintaining a high profile for the firm within and outside the financial community. Meet with senior executives of clients and related business opportunities
  • Able to deal professionally with complexity
  • Provide leadership to Associates/Analysts, and contribute fresh perspectives to the team

Who You Are

  • Ability to work in a results oriented team, centered on clients
  • Minimum 6 years related experience; MBA, CFA or other relevant professional designation preferred
  • Unquestioned professionalism, ethics and reputation. Approach to the workplace which is based on open communication and a team atmosphere
  • Must have a full understanding of, and be fully conversant with Corporate Finance theory and practice and cash flow analysis technique (e.g. discount cash flow analysis)
  • Good understanding of industry, including fundamental market factors, and capital markets activity and influences
  • Ability to effectively differentiate CIBC Capital Markets from the competition through quality of coverage, and service provided
  • Understand existing and potential clients’ needs sufficient to provide advice of appropriate credit structures given the state of credit markets and the credit quality assessment of the client. Well-developed knowledge of corporate credit. Experience in preparing and analyzing complex credit applications/proposals. Excellent understanding of financial statements and accounting principles
  • Well-developed organizational skills in order to respond to shifting priorities on several simultaneous projects
  • Strong ability to manage internal relationships within CIBC Capital Markets and CIBC as they relate to the credit product, coordinating and ensuring the support of the firm’s internal resources where different priorities may exist
  • Proven ability to make professional, judgments and provide assessments and opinions with respect to credit structures and transactions
  • Well-developed interpersonal, presentation, oral and written communication in order to convey factual and conceptual information to others and promote the interests of CIBC Capital Markets
  • Demonstrates ability to create and maintain good relationships with clients at senior levels
  • Demonstrated knowledge of credit capital markets, investment banking, private/public debt and equity capital markets, trade finance, foreign exchange, commercial paper, securitization and financial products
  • Ability to operate Microsoft Office software, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint

At CIBC, we offer a competitive total rewards package. This role has an expected salary of USD$200,000 for the New York, NY market based on experience, qualifications, and location of the position. The successful candidate may be eligible to participate in the relevant business unit’s incentive compensation plan, which also may include a discretionary bonus component.
