Expected Starting Salary Range: 16.00 - 19.01 (TT I) 19.73-24.05 (TT II)
SUBFUNCTION DEFINITION: Oversee the day-to-day running & maintenance of the lab for the purpose of relating to or denoting an organism that contains genetic material into which DNA from an unrelated organism has been artificially introduced.
Representative Responsibilities
  • Animal Husbandry Maintain and independently perform all aspects of animal husbandry for the Transgenic Animal and Genome Editing (TG) Facility. Maintain an accurate census of the mouse colony, anticipate transgenic work load and order mice only when appropriate, observe daily for health status, hormone administration, animal mating, appropriate care and attention to pregnant recipient females and subsequently to potential founder animals. Manage sentinel program, accurately mark animals for identification, perform tail biopsies, accurately identify positive transgenic founders, appropriate monitoring of animals post-surgically, and timely transfer of sentinel checked transgenic animals to individual researchers.
  • Injection Proficiently perform superovulation in female animals by hormone injection. Efficiently isolate fertilized eggs or 4-8 cell embryos/blastocysts from oviducts and uteri. Learn and become proficient in pronuclear and cytoplasmic microinjection to generate transgenic and genetically modified animals; microinject 8-cell embryos/blastocysts with pluripotent ES cells to generate chimeric animals. Work on weekends and holidays when needed.
  • Protocols Perform established laboratory protocols. Prepare media, reagents and solutions. Maintain accurate and detailed records of all laboratory work and experiments. Learn computer skills and enter data into databases. Troubleshoot and correct erroneous results or problems with laboratory equipment. Operate standard laboratory equipment. Order lab supplies.
  • Experiments Proficient in basic molecular biology experiments, including plasmid cloning and amplification, transgene DNA purification, electrophoresis, cell culture and transfection, maintain and target embryonic stem (ES) cells, PCR, enzyme digestion, RNA production by in vitro transcription, TA cloning and sequencing. Learn and become proficient in T7E1/Surveyor assay, CRISPR/Cas technology, and genome-editing project design. Apply standard protocols to specific experiments, research and improve current methods and evaluate innovative techniques. Maintain accurate and detailed records of all laboratory work and experiments.
  • Process Improvement Maintain currency in field through continuing education, literature and seminars. Implement this knowledge into the TG Core Facility. Participate in improving organizational performance through recommending areas or approaches for improvements activities, performing new procedures, collecting data and providing input to department discussions.
Education/ExperienceRequired for Transgenic Tech I:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • 0 - 2 years of work experience in a related job discipline

  • 2 - 5 years of work experience in a related job discipline
