The Denver Public Library (DPL) is a growing urban library system that serves the residents of the City & County of Denver.

DPL is hiring an Assistant Branch Supervisor for the Hampden branch. This position reports to the Branch Supervisor and works as second in charge to manage daily operations at the Branch Library.

In this position, you will supervise staff and oversee daily operations at the Hampden location where all are free to explore and connect.

The ideal candidate must be committed to providing a welcoming environment for all customers with the ability to foster curiosity by promoting our services throughout the community, especially among youth and our underserved populations.

This person must make it a priority to connect with our customers, and build relationships while providing access to our collection and our space in an equitable manner.

This person must be able to demonstrate accountability to members of the communities we serve as a good steward of our resources in a way that reflects our values and commitment to support the needs of a diverse community.

The assistant branch supervisor serves as the person in charge (PIC) at other library locations occasionally; duties include overseeing safety, building security and security officer on duty.

The Hampden Branch is located in Southeast Denver in the Hampden Heights neighborhood. We’re a busy, medium-sized branch with a focus on providing a customer experience that reflects DPL’s Values of Welcoming, Curiosity, Connection, Equity and Stewardship.

About You

Our ideal candidate has :

Experience in presenting and providing library services to customers of varying levels of knowledge and experience.

Knowledge of popular materials and resources for all ages and of current trends in library programming.

Skills in providing programming, reference, and advisory services to all ages.

Ability to oversee the branch collection selection and maintenance.

Ability to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and trauma-informed skills, positive attitude, cultural sensitivity, and sense of humor in working with customers of all ages and backgrounds, coworkers, and community.

Ability to creatively problem-solve, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner.

Ability to calmly listen and respond to customers' complaints and emergency situations.

Ability to interpret and communicate library policies to staff and customers.

Ability to use extensive workplace and other technology including email, internet, databases, eMedia, social media, and other software.

Ability to handle multiple responsibilities, prioritize and set boundaries.

Ability to demonstrate innovation and flexibility.

Ability to work extended hours, including some nights and weekends.

Ability to support organizational goals to maintain morale, to coach staff, and implement progressive discipline if necessary.

Ability to respond to personnel matters and formal / informal employee grievances

Ability to resolve problems and mediates conflicts

Ability to steward all branch activities through scheduling and assigning work to ensure branch service needs are met, and provide desk coverage as needed.

Skill in providing strong, dedicated, inclusive, and compassionate leadership.

Skill to develop goals, document performance, provide performance feedback, and formally evaluate work

Ability to provide training for regional librarian groups.

Ability to implement and oversee services and programming.

Ability to be the person in charge of the branch when needed.

Ability to supervise and coordinate activities of librarians, SAS I (for shelvers), shelvers and youth assistants (afterschool and HFDK).

Ability to coordinate tasks and schedules for branch volunteers.

Ability to submit and follow-up on service requests (IT, Facilities / Maintenance).

A demonstrated commitment to developing and maintaining a welcoming environment for young people, including babies, toddlers, preschoolers, grade schoolers, and teens.

Minimum requirements : Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science and two years of professional librarian experience.
