About Our JobPlease Note: We will be hiring 2 interns into this position for FALL 2024Denver's Department of Public Health & Environment (DDPHE) advances Denver's environmental and public health goals. DDPHE works with city, state, and community partners to conduct education, community engagement, and enforcement to promote healthy people, healthy pets, and a sustainable environment. DDPHE has six divisions: Community & Behavioral Health, Denver Animal Protection, Environmental Quality, Office of the Medical Examiner, Public Health Investigations, and Shared Services and Business Operations. DDPHE fosters an inclusive culture by respecting the values, customs, and authenticity of everyone and by implementing equitable public health strategies so Denver communities can thrive.The Shared Services and Business Operations division has an opening for a fall Epidemiology Intern. This position will work under the Epidemiology & Data Science program in supporting communicable disease response in the City and County of Denver. Through this internship, the student will gain experience of working in applied epidemiology through a variety of routine and non-routine communicable disease investigations, outbreak investigations, community outreach, data analysis, and surveillance activities. Additionally, the student will gain interdisciplinary education and exposure through shadowing other DDPHE programs that work directly with external partners (i.e., shelters serving persons experiencing homelessness, retail food establishments, childcare facilities, etc.).
This is a limited internship position allotted for 120 hours across 8 to 12 weeks and is not eligible for benefits. The intern hired will be expected to be able to report to the Department’s office location at least once weekly during the internship period and possibly other offsite locations within the City and County of Denver.As an intern you’ll get to experience:
  • Support and assist Disease Intervention Specialists with investigation & management of communicable disease cases.
  • Support and assist Epidemiologists with communicable disease outbreak investigations.
  • Assist with data entry and data management needs.
  • Support Epidemiologists with basic data analysis and presentation of findings to program staff and other partners, as appropriate.
  • Attend Epidemiology & Data Science program and team meetings.
  • Attend external partner calls and liaise with community partners, as needed.
  • Assist with creation and update of program materials (guidance documents, fact sheets, protocols, templates, etc.).
  • Conduct literature reviews related to ongoing initiatives or projects within the program.
  • Participate in DDPHE program orientations not limited to program-level presentations, shadowing and tour opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
About YouOur ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:
  • Current students seeking a graduate degree in public health, epidemiology, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in public health and working in applied epidemiology and communicable disease response.
  • Ability to exercise flexibility and adaptability with time and tasks.
  • Ability to work on projects independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and liaise with internal and external partners.
  • Student intern much be a Colorado resident

  • Education Requirement: Current enrollment in an accredited college program leading to a certificate, licensure, associates, bachelor’s, or higher degree in, or a recent graduate (completed specified program within 1 year of completion).

  • Education and Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted.
Note: While a driver’s license is not required, individuals in these positions may need to attend in-person events around Denver. The individuals must arrange for transportation to attend such events should they arise.Mandatory documentation required to be considered for this position:

Location Flexibility
The City and County of Denver utilizes a hybrid model workplace that balances the responsibilities of public service with the benefits of a flexible work environment. Employees work where needed, at a city site and/or in the field several days a week and telecommute remotely at a designated workplace within the State of Colorado the remaining days.
