DPL is hiring a Branch Security Officer. In this position, you will be responsible for the safety and security of everyone on library property, including staff, collections, and customers. You will create a welcoming environment for the whole community in alignment with our library use policy. Daily duties include patrolling the entire building/parking lot throughout the day, opening the building and securing the building at closing, and writing daily activity logs. You will also work with the whole team creating positive experiences for library customers by greeting and building relationships with customers across all ages and backgrounds, shelving materials, maintaining the collection, and assisting with technology. You will foster relationships while equitably serving a diverse community seeking information, resources, and experiences.
You will address behaviors that violate our library use policy while using a trauma informed approach and de-escalation techniques to ensure everyone's safety. This position requires communication with the safety and security team at the Central Library, and includes writing incident and accident reports, completing safety-focused training, and fulfilling the expectations of our Safety Ambassador.
About Our Branch Ross-Broadway Branch Library is located at the intersection of the Baker, West Washington Park, and Speer neighborhoods. The Broadway business district anchors the neighborhood, and is bustling with activity from bars, restaurants, and vintage stores. We value and welcome all members of our community, including youth, older adults, and our unhoused neighbors. Though small in square footage, our branch is highly used by our community, who rely on the library for access to materials and technology, and for a space to connect with their neighbors.
About You About you Our ideal candidate has:
- Solid customer service background and is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment to everyone who uses the library.
- Knowledge of safety and security in a public setting.
- Knowledge of emergency procedures, safety hazards and how to delegate to a team.
- Ability to use workplace technology effectively including email, calendar, internet, databases, video conferencing, and other software.
- Ability to thrive working in a diverse environment with constant public contact.
- Ability to creatively solve problems, and handle stressful situations in a positive manner, including situations involving trauma, mental illness, and substance abuse.
- Ability to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, positive attitude, cultural sensitivity and sense of humor in working with customers of all ages and backgrounds, coworkers and community.
- Skill in de-escalation and positive communication.
- Ability to complete concise and grammatically correct reports.
- Ability to pass a physical and mental fitness examination and a background check after the offer to hire has been made.
- Ability to successfully complete First Aid/CPR/AED, Narcan, Verbal De-escalation, and Defensive Tactics training.
- Ability to obtain an unarmed security guard license issued by the City and County of Denver.
- Experience with Trauma Informed Care or Mental Health First Aid preferred.
- A demonstrated commitment to developing and maintaining a welcoming environment for young people, including babies, toddlers, preschoolers, grade schoolers, and teens.
- One year of experience working with security or loss prevention preferred.
- Employees will be required to work at any of our locations due to emergency situations fill leaves/vacancies, operational need, etc.
