City of Augusta, GA is Hiring a Building Inspector Supervisor Near Augusta, GA

DESCRIPTION

Responsible for supervising the Building Inspectors and their activities. Reports to the Building Official. Responsible for supervising and conducting on-site building inspections of commercial and residential buildings to conform to the appropriate codes and ordinances. Notifies contractors, engineers, fire and health department officials, homeowners and the public to ensure compliance within the adopted codes and ordinances. Responsible for training subordinates.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervise building inspectors to ensure that construction projects conform to the appropriate codes; resolve complaints and disputes between the construction inspectors and contractors, architects, engineers, and the general public; performs as a field technical advisor; train and serve as a resource to subordinate personnel. Ensures that inspections are performed within the designated time frame and assist staff in solving controversial issues.
  • Conducts on-site inspections of commercial and residential buildings to ensure that projects meet the code requirements within the guidelines of the International Codes and relevant State and Local Ordinances. Notifies contractors, engineers, architects, subcontractors and property owners of code violations and discuss remedies for deficiencies. Inspect for soil erosion and to ensure that BMP's are in compliance and take appropriate action.
  • Issues warnings and correction notices, stop work orders, occupancy documents that address various violations; maintain background records for possible legal actions. Confers with city staff to ensure consistent code and ordinance enforcement.
  • Checks to ensure that contractors are State Licensed, proper permits and business licenses have been obtained and inspections are performed.
  • Enter inspection(s) results into permitting system regarding inspection findings as soon as possible to track when the inspection was completed.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: High School Diploma or GED.
Experience: Seven (7) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform residential and commercial inspections, including one year of supervising and training subordinates.
Certification(s): Must possess International Code Council Commercial Building Inspector Certification and 1 additional ICC Certification. Must obtain a 3rd ICC Certification within 6 months of hire date or promotion.
Licensing: Possession of a valid driver's license with good driving history. If State license is other than Georgia or South Carolina, applicant must obtain a license in Georgia or South Carolina within 30 days of employment.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of State Law, The International Codes, State and Augusta Codes and ordinances
  • Proficiency in interpreting plans, technical specifications, drawings and diagrams
  • Mastery of operating required testing equipment, two-way radio, camera and standard office equipment
  • Experience with computers and computer software
  • Familiarity with departmental policies and procedures
  • Proficiency in problem solving
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently
  • Strong supervisory skills
OTHER
  • This position requires staff call up in an emergency situation.
  • More than 50% of this position involves travel from office to other locations.

  • Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental, or subjective criteria, as opposed to that which is clearly measurable or verifiable.
  • Physical Abilities: Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and prolonged standing, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).
  • Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
  • Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, and toxic agents.
