Job Description
Telecommunicator (Dispatcher) – Police Department

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIESReceives/dispatches incoming requests for emergency/non-emergency assistance for police, fire, or other
city provided services, enters and retrieves computerized law enforcement data.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Operates/monitors various channels (i.e. police, fire, point to point, public works, Illinois State Police
  Emergency Radio Network (ISPERN) etc.) of a radio console; dispatches provided information as
  necessary.
• Receives emergency/non-emergency calls for assistance, obtains/provides necessary information,
  and/or dispatches to appropriate service unit.
• Receives and facilitates requests for services such as tow trucks, Illinois Department of Transportation
  (IDOT), Ameren Illinois, and emergency vehicles as needed.
• Maintains computerized records of stolen items, wanted/missing persons, warrants, validations, etc.;
  and logs all computer entries and cancellations.
• Accesses, utilizes, and relays information from federal, state, and local law enforcement computer
  systems specifically Law Enforcement Agencies Data Systems (LEADS), Regional Justice Information
• Center (REJIS), and in-house police reporting computer system.
• Completes police reports and makes supplementary reports as needed.
• Assists in building security by allowing only authorized individuals into secured doors leading to the
  police station; monitors an alarm panel.
• Operates/monitors various communication equipment such as a radio/telephone system, paging system,
  and TDD device for the deaf as well as various video surveillance systems
• Trains other employees on job duties as needed
• All other duties as assigned

SUPERVISION RECEIVEDSupervision is provided by the Police Supervisor/Commander of given shift.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

• Ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others.
• Good general intelligence and emotional stability with the ability to understand and carry out oral and
  written instructions; and able to write and speak effectively.

MIMIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Graduation from an accredited high school or the possession of a GED Certificate for high school
  awarded by a state or the United States Government.
• A comprehensive background investigation will be completed by the Alton Police Department.
• Residency: Must be willing to establish and maintain their principle domicile within the counties of:
  Illinois – Madison, Jersey, Macoupin, St Clair; Missouri – St Louis, St Charles within 90 days after
  probationary period􀂃 LEADS certification must be obtained during probationary employee status. Recertification is required
  periodically throughout employment.
• Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) certification and Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH)
  licensing must be obtained during probationary employee status. Recertification is required periodically
  throughout employment.
