City of Apopka is Hiring a Transportation Coordinator Near Apopka, FL

General DescriptionPerforms primary duty of transportation planning, location, level-of-service and coordination of the Apopka road and trail infrastructure. The performance of work requires extensive knowledge of an advanced type, including the consistent exercise of discretion and judgment, in the transportation field. Compensation meets minimum standards. This is a professional level position providing research and technical support to the Community Development Department. Work includes technical assistant in development of the Transportation Element of the City's Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Code, regular assignments to be performed independently, preparation of planning and project analysis, involvement in the land development process and special projects relating to community development and transportation planning. Work is performed under the general direction of the Community Development Director, City Administrator and Mayor, and requires the exercise of independent judgment and initiative within the framework of regulations. Performance is reviewed through conferences and analysis as well as evaluations.
Essential Job Functions
  • Work requires attention to detail in assisting the Community Development Department in conducting transportation planning related research, preparation of reports and presentation of materials, field work, maintenance and update of elements of the Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Code; review of development plans to assure transportation compliance with the Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Code.
  • Assists in the preparation, maintenance and review of Development Agreements, Socioeconomic Data, Concurrency Management System and/or the Community Development Department database.
  • Assists in the preparation of documents and presentations for the Planning Commission, City Council and various advisory boards for the evaluation and appraisal of the Comprehensive Plan as required by the Public Participation Plan.
  • Administer and produce special projects such as the production of the City Newsletter, focused transportation related projects and studies, and planning studies. Work closely with staff from other departments to secure input from all departments to ensure that issues and projects are prepared and coordinated in a comprehensive fashion.
  • Provides assistance and information to the public and development community on issues related to transportation planning. May prepare special reports and studies related to annexation, economic development, or the City's Community Redevelopment Plan, as they relate to transportation, transit and multi-modal facilities. Represents the City on regional or intergovernmental boards such as the MPO (and sub-committees), the East Central Florida Regional Planning Commission (ECFRPC), Orange County, etc.
  • Work requires sitting for extended periods using a word processor; preparing reports, letters, memoranda; meeting with various committees; preparation of planning studies as outlined in the Comprehensive Plan, including but not limited to Transportation, Housing, Downtown Redevelopment, and Urban Design.
  • Work requires occasional standing and bending in reviewing of maps, plats and files.
  • Performs any other duties or tasks that may be assigned
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Transportation planning knowledge as it relates to comprehensive plans, zoning codes, building codes and planning procedures; principles and practices of land planning and growth management; ordinances, resolutions; legal descriptions (including ability to write as well as verify legal descriptions and to draft site plans).
  • Ability to evaluate and determine level of service for development and calculate impact of development of local, County, regional and State roads and transportation systems, including trail systems.
  • Must be familiar with the Florida Comprehensive Planning and other applicable laws pertaining to transportation planning.
  • Knowledge of the organization, functions and procedures of City government, including the principles and practices of planning and zoning.
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing and to read planning and construction development plans that relate to transportation facilities.
  • Keeping work areas clean and organized.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduate of a four-year accredited college or university with a degree in Planning or a directly related field required and a minimum of five years professional general planning experience with progressively increasing responsibilities. Master's Degree preferred.
  • Must possess a valid State of Florida Driver's License.
Physical RequirementsStanding, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, tasting or smelling, and lifting up to 25 pounds under 1/3 of the time; sitting, gripping or feeling with hands, and reaching with hands and arms 1/3 to 2/3 of the time; and, talking or hearing over 2/3 of the time. Lifting up to 25 pounds.
EQUIPMENT USEDComputer, calculator, copies, and other office equipment as required. Computer GIS mapping for transportation facilities.
JOB LOCATIONCommunity Development Department, Apopka City Hall. Some travel will be required for meetings, seminars or conferences.
