Recreation Leader (average of 20 hours per week) Under general direction, plans and conducts department activities, monitors a variety of City programs, events and social activities at various sites throughout the City including, but not limited to the Community Center, Youth Center, Bloss Mansion and grounds, picnic shelters, City parks and other related City facilities, schools, recreation facilities, and administrative offices. FLSA Status: Nonexempt. Bargaining Group: Miscellaneous Unit.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThis is a specialized classification for positions assigned to develop and monitor volunteers and participants, lead and/or assist with events and activities, provide customer service at City facilities where programs, classes, social activities, meetings, and related events are being held. Incumbents in this classification are required to work various work hours such as nights, weekends, and holidays depending on the activity, program, or social function that is scheduled.REPORTS TORecreation Supervisor or as assigned.CLASSIFICATIONS SUPERVISEDThis is not a supervisory classification.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Serves as a representative of the Recreation and Community Events divisions.Demonstrates a positive attitude and progressive actions through the display of professionalism, courtesy, and appropriate tact and discretion in all interactions with facility users, activity participants, co-workers, and the public.May organize and coordinate and/or assist with events and activities.Closely monitors the actions of program participants and facility users. Provides general clean-up of assigned facility (e.g., light janitorial, empty trash containers, replenish restroom supplies, sweep, and mop floors, wipe tables, etc.)Performs set-up and take down of tables and chairs associated room equipment, and sports equipment.Enforces facility rental policies and procedures.Ensures that facilities are properly opened and closed.Maintains inventory of equipment and condition of facility before, during, and after a particular event or function.Assists with organization, coordination, and marketing of department programs, events, and activities.Maintains records and prepares reports as required.Conducts and guides recreational activities such as arts and crafts, science, nature, drama, and sports.Maintains order and assists in the promotion of and adherence to the department rules, regulations, and policies.Assists in instruction of volunteer and subordinate personnel in in-service training and recreation workshops for leaders.Performs a variety of reception, clerical, and administrative tasks as necessitated by assignment.Uses good judgment and remains calm when dealing with problems.May be required to attend night and weekend events.May be assigned other related work as needed.Knowledge of: First aid methods and procedures.Light custodial maintenance practices and procedures, including light repairs to buildings and related equipment.Accident prevention and safety practices and procedures.Customer service techniques and standards.Operation of audio and video equipment.Materials, methods, and equipment used in parks and/or recreation settings.Ability to: Think and react clearly, quickly, and accurately in emergencies.Write up incident and accident forms.Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work.Respond to and resolve concerns that arise from customers related to facility usage.Assist facility renters with the schematic diagrams of floor plan for banquets, class functions, and other activities and events.Follow oral and written instructions and directions.Lift and carry heavy objects; run forward, backward, and laterally.Communicate in a clear and concise manner.Travel to and from work site as needed.Ability to observe assigned working hours.Ability to work any shift including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays as assigned.Inspect facilities and equipment for safety.Assist in promotion of activities.Implement training exercises.Oversee recreational activities and employees.Maintain records and produce after event evaluations.TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSSit for extended periods; frequently stand, bend, stoop, kneel, and walk; normal manual dexterity and eye hand coordination; lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs.; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer, telephone, calculator, copiers, and FAX.TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONSWork is performed in a community building, indoor and/or outdoor City facility, or field environment; provides support and customer service to staff and the public; works independently within established guidelines.
