PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The hiring rate for this position is $31.71875 hourly/$65,975 annually. This is subject to change per the 2025/26 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
This position is considered non-exempt. You will be eligible for overtime per the Fair Standards Labor Act.

The Aurora Police Department is accepting applications until 11:59pm MST, July 5th, 2024, toward establishing a new Prospective Employment List (PEL) for the prospective January 2025 academy on January 13th, 2025. The date is subject to change. Once you apply and pass the minimum qualifications screening, all updates and/or instructions regarding the hiring process will be sent via email as it becomes available.
The comprehensive breakdown of the rates of pay per the 2024 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) contract is below - ** this is subject to change per the 2025/26 Collective Bargaining Agreement when released:
Year 1, Grade IV: $31.71875 hourly/$65,975 annually.
Year 2, Grade Ill: $35.13510 hourly/$73,081 annually.
Year 3, Grade II: $38.82260 hourly/$80,751 annually.
Year 4, Grade I: 42.07260 hourly/$87,511 annually.
Year 5, Grade l(B): $50.96663 hourly/$106,011 annually.
The Aurora Police Department is looking for individuals who represent diversity in thought and experiences, which are shared by our citizens. Candidates must have strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing. Candidates should possess good interpersonal skills, common sense, and have the ability to problem solve.
SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WILL BE OFFERED AN OPPORTUNITY TO JOIN THE AURORA POLICE DEPARTMENT IN THE PRE-HIRE PROGRAM PRIOR TO THE ACADEMY START DATE. THE PAY IS IDENTICAL TO THE ACADEMY PAY AT 40 HRS/WEEK.
Examples of Duties
A comprehensive list of a police officer's duties is not possible, but officers working within the Aurora Police Department perform some of the following functions:
  • Handle (emergency and non-emergency) calls for service received by our Communications Center.
  • Investigate and determine what type of, or if, crimes have occurred.
  • Make sound decisions using knowledge, training and experience.
  • Positively interact with the public.
  • Problem solves complex community issues and look for innovative solutions to reduce repeat calls for service.

Benefits
Uniforms:
  • A Glock Model 45 will be furnished by the Department at no cost.
  • Officers receive $1000 body armor vest allowance once every four years.
  • All uniforms and equipment are furnished in conformance with the Collaborative Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
Vacation and Holidays:
  • Vacation- 80 hours annually (increasing with seniority to a maximum of 200 hours annually}.
  • Paid Holidays- 9 days annually.
  • Personal Leave- 28 hours annually after completion of 1 year of continuous service.
Sick Leave:
  • 120 hours annually.
Health, Dental, Vision and Life Insurance:
  • The City of Aurora offers contributions to a variety of health insurance plans, including some where the monthly premium is completely covered by the city. Employees have optional dental, vision and life insurance plans available to them. Employees can also add life insurance coverage for their dependents. Insurance does not take effect until the 1st day of the month following the date of hire (ex. Hire date of May 5th, insurance effective June 1st).
Disability:
  • The City contribution provides death and disability coverage through the Fire & Police Pension Association (FPPA).
Retirement:

  • Officers and the City both contribute 12% bi-weekly into a 401(A)-retirement fund with a 5-year vestment. IRS qualified tax-exempt retirement plans meeting 401(A) status can be rolled over when the candidate provides IRS determination letter, subject to approval of the Retirement Board.
Deferred Compensation:
  • Officers will be auto-enrolled to contribute a minimum of 1% up to 5% of their pre-tax salary, on a bi-weekly basis into a 457 (b) Deferred Compensation plan, managed by Nationwide Retirement Solutions. This is a supplement to your FPPA benefit.
  • Additionally, Officers will also have the option to contribute funds (post-tax, and up to a certain dollar amount) into a Roth plan, also managed by Nationwide retirement solutions.
Training:
  • Annual in-service training. Officers are also eligible for job-related sponsored training.
Other:
  • PRE-HIRE PROGRAM: The City of Aurora and Aurora Police Department has an optional pre-hire program for all successful candidates. This will allow you to start with the department prior to the academy start date; Please contact careers@auroragov.org for further information about the program.
