  • Observes and assists professionals in the assigned department to learn about areas of career interest.
  • Conducts research, collects and organizes data, performs analyses, and prepares reports to supplement knowledge gained through academic courses.
  • Proposes solutions to existing problems and discusses recommendations with administrative personnel to acquire skills in problem solving.
  • Is responsible for special projects as assigned.

Full/Part Time Part-Time Department Austin Public Library Location Austin History Center, 810 Guadalupe St., 78701 About Department & Key Responsibilities
    The Archivist I Reference - Intern Graduate will provide reference services to the public in the Austin History Center ( AHC ) reading room. The intern will also answer email, phone, and postal reference questions. This position is funded for six (6) months. The internship may receive funding for an additional six months and be extended, provided the intern is still enrolled in a graduate studies program.
    Key Responsibilities:
  • Intern will provide reference support in the reading room and remotely.
  • Intern will provide customer service or assistance to visitors.
  • Intern will create and update subject guides as needed.
  • Intern will process archival collections as needed.
  • Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
    1. Provides archival reference and research services.
    2. Assists the public in using collections by explaining available resources and methods for locating information.
    3. Organizes, processes, and conserves archival and/or library collections.
    4. Creates finding aids and reference guides by organizing and describing records so that information is accessible.
    5. Collects, maintains, and reports statistics.
    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Completion of some archival enterprise/management coursework as part of graduate studies.
  • Experience working or volunteering in an archives, museum, or other cultural heritage organization.
  • Experience providing customer service or assistance to visitors.
  • Beginning or in 2nd year of graduate study.
  • Days and Hours Part-Time (15 hours weekly); Sundays 11-5 PM and some flexibility for hours on Wednesdays-Fridays Physical Demands
    • Must be able to stoop, bend, walk, and reach to heights of six (6) feet.
    • Must be able to pull or lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
    • Must be able to push loaded book truck weighing up to three hundred (300) pounds.
    • Must have manual dexterity to operate computer keyboard.
