  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent plus one (1) year of experience in general construction, or custodial building maintenance or repair work.
  • One (1) additional year of relevant work experience may substitute for one (1) year of the required education with a maximum substitution of four (4) years.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • Texas Class “C” Operator’s License.

The City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department (PARD) provides, protects and preserves a park system that promotes quality recreational, cultural and outdoor experiences for the Austin community.
The purpose of the Temporary – General Maintenance Worker I position is to, under general supervision, perform building and grounds maintenance tasks at the Turner-Roberts Recreation Center. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Clean building interiors and exterior perimeter space.
  • Assist with set-up and clean-up of exhibit gym space and multi-purpose rooms for programs and events as needed.

  • Driving Requirement: This position requires a valid Texas Class “C” Operator’s License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.
  • Physical Requirements : Tasks may involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying, or using a force equal to lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Must be physically and mentally able to work with participants adapting to a variety of conditions such as daily walking, standing, balancing, kneeling, stooping, running, bending, crawling, and stretching. Must be able to tolerate loud noise associated with enthusiasm and excitement. Ability to work outside in all types of weather and/or inclement conditions, and in confined spaces.

  • All PARD work site locations are tobacco-free. Use of tobacco products and/or e-cigarettes is not permitted on any PARD work site – including construction sites, parking lots, garages or in any personal vehicles located on the premises.
Pay Range
$20.80 per hour.

Work/Location Schedule Notes:
  • Monday through Friday with rotating shifts of 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
  • May be required to work during special events, some weekends & holidays.
  • Work schedule and location is subject to change based on department needs and programs.
  • May be required to work during city emergencies such as extreme weather events.

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Experience:
  • Experience related to grounds keeping or general labor services at a recreational facility or similar setting.
  • Experience using hand tools, powers tools, and other maintenance equipment including but not limited to, leaf blowers, string mowers, walk-behind curb edgers, and large mowers.
  • Experience with minor plumbing repair.
  • Experience in using cleaning materials.
Other:
  • Ability to travel to more than one work location.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  • Tapes, floats, and textures sheetrock, hammers nails/stakes.
  • Measures using tapes, transits, levels, etc.
  • Moves furniture, file cabinets, equipment, changes light bulbs.
  • Paints, varnishes, and/or seals walls, ceilings, floors, furniture, equipment, etc using brushes, rollers, air sprayers, etc.
  • Installs and/or replaces floor and ceramic tiles.
  • Drives vehicles as needed, such as truck, pick-up truck, etc.
  • Replaces glass in doors and windows, repairs and replaces door locks and knobs.
  • Performs unskilled carpentry work in the construction/repair of walls, ceilings, etc. Repairs and replace electric plugs and cords. Performs simple plumbing installations and repairs such as install or repair faucets, unclogs drains, replaces valves, etc.
  • Operates drills, buffers, grinders, sanders, power saws, radial arm, skill saw, etc.
  • Performs basic service on pumps, air handlers, cooling towers, etc repack, change oil and filters, lubricate, etc.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of equipment, methods, and materials used in routine painting, carpentry and moderate levels of construction.
  • Knowledge of basic electricity and plumbing.
  • Knowledge of proper safety practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the equipment, methods and materials used in ground maintenance.
  • Knowledge of proper methods and procedures used in cleaning work area and equipment.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in planning and organizing.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other City employees and the public
