City of Bakersfield, CA is Hiring an Engineering Technician I - Temporary Near Bakersfield, CA

Class Summary

Under general supervision, performs work of average difficulty involving technical office and field work checking development plans for conformance with City standards; preparing and checking final maps, legal descriptions, plans and specifications utilizing computer aided drafting format and performing research of record information in the Public Works Department. Performs other work as required.

Representative Duties
The following typical tasks and responsibilities are representative of all positions in the class. They are descriptive, not limiting.
Essential Duties:
  • Prepares property descriptions and drafts plats for annexations, public way openings and closing
  • Prepares descriptions both written and graphic for property to be deeded to the City
  • Drafts plans for public improvement districts
  • Prepares estimates
  • Calculates individual assessments
  • Performs research work in checking and verifying names establishing ownerships, assessed valuation and similar projects
  • Develops original base maps from recorded tract maps and field survey notes
  • Develops original base maps from recorded data and field survey information
  • Carries out mathematical checks on subdivision maps
  • Performs improvement plan checking and final map checking
  • Answers inquiries from the public in person or by telephone assists engineer in preparation of plans, specifications and estimates on more difficult projects
  • Prepares plans utilizing computer aided drafting format, specifications and estimates on projects involving average difficulty
  • Performs other work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Training and Experience:
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or G.E.D. equivalent, AND four (4) years of experience performing sub-professional engineering or field survey work in a civil engineering environment including two (2) years of computer aided drafting experience, OR
  • Two (2) years of college in an Engineering related field AND two (2) years of experience as an Engineering Aide II or Computer Drafting Technician
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related field may be substituted for the required experience
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD is highly desirable
Licenses, Certificates and Special Requirements:
  • Valid California Class "C" driver's license
  • Must be able to pass a background check
Physical Conditions or Special Working Conditions:
  • Standard office environment and working conditions
  • Must be able to work outdoors to obtain field data along roadways in all weather conditions
Distinguishing Characteristics

This class is distinguished from the Engineering Aide and Computer Drafting Technician series in that it requires less supervision and direction. This class works independently and is assigned projects such as: preparing annexation plats, plan checking, writing legal descriptions, etc. in addition to computer aided drafting. Work is carried out under the general direction of senior engineers in the department and is reviewed by inspection of results.
