City of Baltimore is Hiring an Automotive Service Writer - Department of General Services Near Baltimore, MD

POSTING DATE: 06/07/2024CLOSING DATE: 06/21/2024 AT 12:00 MIDNIGHTSALARY RANGE: $52,935.00 - $64,267.00 ANNUALLY EDUCATION ACCREDITATION: Applicant’s education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency. Evaluation agencies information may be obtained at www.naces.org.
ELIGIBILITY: Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK: Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to this position identified as positions of trust will be required to authorize the release of and successfully complete a Fingerprint check.
PROBATION: All persons, including current City employees, selected from this position will be on probation for 6 months.
Class DescriptionAn Automotive Service Writer prepares repair orders for vehicles in for servicing and serves as the liaison between city agencies and Fleet Management Division on the status of vehicles. Work of this class does not involve any supervising duties or responsibilities.
Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class may work shift work including weekend hours and are subject to callback. Work is performed in an automotive repair shop where unpleasant odors, dirty and greasy shop conditions are regularly encountered. Work requires strenuous physical exertion including lifting, bending, crawling and periods of prolonged standing.

The training and experience of each candidate will be evaluated for appropriateness and quantity. It is essential, therefore, that you give complete and accurate information on your application. Minimum QualificationsOn or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:EDUCATION: Have graduated from high school or possession of a GED certificate.
ANDEXPERIENCE: Have four years of experience working in an automotive repair service center environment. Diagnosing the problems/routine maintenance of automotive vehicles, trash trucks, fire trucks and other mechanical or electrical equipment
ORNOTES (EQUIVALENCIES): Have an equivalent combination of education and experience.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES: A valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent driver's license and eligibility to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit is required.

  • Knowledge of customer service in an automotive maintenance repair environment.
  • Knowledge of vehicle mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems,
  • Knowledge of repair tools, materials and methods.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  • Ability to pinpoint cause of automotive malfunctions.
  • Ability to evaluate adequacy of repair.
  • Ability to explain automotive repair methods and procedures.
  • Ability to interpret and enforce departmental work and safety regulations.
  • Ability to maintain records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and other agencies personnel.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
