THIS IS A NON-CIVIL SERVICE POSITIONOPENING DATE: 06/14/2024CLOSING DATE: 09/14/2024 AT 12:00AM MIDNIGHTSALARY RANGE: $37,989.00 - $41,849.00 AnnuallyClass DescriptionA Building Repairer maintains and repairs the physical structures and utility systems of Convention Center. The work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities.
Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek. Work is performed in and outside of Convention Center where such conditions as the seasonal extremes of weather, cramped spaces and working at heights from ladders and scaffolding may be encountered. The work requires moderate physical exertion involving the movement of lumber, cement, pipes, and masonry products.
Essential Functions
  • Performs a wide variety of painting work, such as priming and painting walls, trim, moldings, and plaster; mixing and matching paints, and selecting paints.
  • Performs a wide variety of carpentry work, such as installing, repairing, or replacing wooden doors and jambs, windows and sashes, floorboards, glue-in or drop ceilings, trim and moldings, bookcases, shelves, paneling, banisters, balustrades, tabletops, and related hard and laminated wood fixtures.
  • Performs a wide variety of masonry work, such as mixing and matching cement, plaster, and plastic glues; detecting, spackling, and sanding wall, floor, and ceiling cracks and holes; cutting and setting pieces of sheetrock and wallboard; repointing and resetting bricks, cinder blocks and related masonry materials; taping wall seams and cracks; setting floor tile according to design specifications and restoring damaged masonry fixtures.
  • Performs a wide variety of plumbing work, such as replacing faucets and attachments; repairing and replacing commercial flush valves, washers, diaphragms, floats, and fountain fixtures; and repairing and replacing various plumbing fixtures, pipes, and system parts.
  • Performs a wide variety of electrical work, such as repairing and replacing light fixtures, sockets, switches, and wall outlets, repairing cords, and wiring, and repairing a variety of electrical fixtures, equipment, and related systems.
  • Performs a wide variety of basic maintenance/repair work to the facility and equipment such as door handles, lock cylinders and mechanisms, thermostat adjustments, door closers, restroom partitions air compressors, loading dock levelers, pumps motors and other related equipment.
  • Replaces and repairs windows, windowpanes, and related glass and plastic panels, including cutting and setting glass in panes and glazing.
  • Requisitions tools, supplies, and spare parts as necessary.
  • Makes suggestions for improvements in buildings.
  • Performs related work as required.
Education And Experience RequirementsEDUCATION: Have graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate
ANDEXPERIENCES: Have three years of experience in building repair and maintenance work including experience in four of the five following trades: plumbing, carpentry, painting, masonry, or electrical work.
ORNOTES(EQUIVALENCIES): Six months of additional experience in one of the five above-mentioned trades may be substituted for each year of the high school or GED requirement.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES: A valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license, or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management may be required.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Knowledge of the tools, materials, techniques, and equipment of four of the five following areas: painting, carpentry, masonry, plumbing or electrical trades.
  • Skill in performing painting, carpentry, masonry, plumbing or electrical work.
  • Ability to work on ladders and scaffolds.
