JOB DESCRIPTION

CEAB Hourly Range $18.16 - $24.92

POSITION TITLE:  Wastewater Maintenance Worker

REPORTS TO: Wastewater Foreman,

Wastewater Maintenance Crew Leader - if assigned to Lift Stations.

SUPERVISES: N/A

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Responsible for the inspection and maintenance of the wastewater linear sanitary sewer systems and providing recommendations for repair and replacement. Performs complex maintenance and repair tasks associated with the Wastewater Collections Systems. Supports the implementation of the Wastewater Operations and Maintenance Programs; escalate emergency repair and replacement needs to the supervisor, review inspection results and operational history of the wastewater assets ensuring all data captured is of the highest quality. Responsible for ensuring all data captured is recorded for analysis in computerized asset and/or maintenance programs utilized in the Wastewater Operations and Maintenance Programs.

An incumbent will be required to perform duties on an on-call basis as indicated by on-call rotation schedules.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

Operates sewer jet truck, inductor truck, root saw, tandem axle dump trucks and other collection equipment, including loader or backhoe during the snow plow season.

Operates smoke blower, and track or push-pull mini- camera to locate roots, grease, breaks, sink holes, and house lines. 

Assist in the preparation of work sites to include the erection of appropriate barricades,

record and report defects or failures in collection and conveyance of wastewater, ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (continued)

including sewer inspections and sanitary sewer overflow events.

Assist in the maintenance and repair of motors and pumps and report equipment

defects or failures.

Assist in cleaning wet wells at sanitary lift stations.

Perform skilled and semiskilled work in order to install, maintain, and repair the sanitary sewer collection systems.

Install and maintain sewer mains, services, manholes.

Prepare work site by setting up traffic control, breaking street surfaces, and digging.

Make repairs to work sites by refilling trenches, mixing, pouring, and smoothing asphalt, gravel and other materials to replace street surfaces, including landscaping.

Perform work to cut, thread and tap pipes.

Install pipe sections by positioning, joining, aligning, calking, and sealing joints.

Respond to emergencies and act to control sewage leaks and overflows in a manner that is safe for self and public and to minimize environmental impact.

Perform maintenance duties within and around wastewater facilities including work sites.

Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of vehicle and garage areas, including sweeping, hosing floors, washing walls, and cleaning pits.

Maintain accessibility to vehicles, equipment, materials, lift stations, and work sites by plowing, shoveling, and removing snow.

Recognize the need for structural repairs and replacement; determines the methods, material and equipment required and, upon approval, performs repairs.

Maintains and prepares proper reports and records relating to smoke testing, TV inspections, sewer jet log, orders for equipment, emergency call outs, job work and corrective orders, equipment repair, vehicle maintenance, grease trap inspections, manhole data sheets and confined space entry forms.

May fabricate and repair broken and worn parts of equipment using welder.

Handle property owner complaints and rodent control.

Perform CCTV inspections using CCTV software to capture defect data.

Operation and maintenance of the CCTV truck equipment, including vehicle inspections,

repairs and replacements of broken or worn parts.

Work in partnership with all Wastewater department personnel to perform inspections and develop complete Asset Replacement program, and reporting, to support the Wastewater Operations and Maintenance Program.

Create data for maps for CCTV inspection.

Read and interprets maps.

Identify and work with the supervisor to resolve reoccurring downtime or inefficient operational issues.

Will be required to perform duties on an on-call basis as needed and to respond to emergency calls at lift stations and collection call outs. Must carry call out phone one week at a time on call 24/7 and must respond within 30 min of call out.

Repair broken or worn parts on department system vehicles; perform vehicle inspections on Refuge trucks on an annual basis.

Performs related duties as directed or as the situation dictates.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

Run snow plow route under the supervision of street department supervisor.

Assists other departments with special projects as requested including cleaning and inspecting storm sewers and locating sewer utilities.

Locate sanitary sewer for “811 Digger’s Hotline”.

Inventory reporting and control.

Handles customer complaints and inquiries.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITY:

Knowledge of occupational hazards involved and safety precautions necessary in the proper operation of tandem axle trucks and equipment related to snow plow operation, particularly over slippery surfaces.

Knowledge of the tools, methods and techniques commonly employed in the electrical,

mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic trades.

Knowledge of the machinery and the equipment operation of a waste facility, lift stations, and/or collection systems.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. 

Ability to perform basic input and retrieval function on a personal computer system.

Ability to keep records and prepare reports.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the general public.

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND/OR LICENSES:

High School diploma or equivalent preferred.

Must possess a valid operator’s license at the time of hire and maintain throughout the course of employment. 

Must obtain a Commercial Driver’s License within six months of hire and maintain it throughout the course of employment.

Minimum of (1) year of underground utility experience in maintenance or construction preferred (Ex. Wastewater, Water, Sewer, Storm lines, Plumbing.)

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work requires a considerable amount of physical activity, including walking, standing, kneeling, bending, crouching, reaching, stooping and climbing ladders. Incumbent must have the ability to work in and climb in and out of confined spaces. 

An incumbent must have the ability to exert force of 10-25 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally. Must possess the coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate hand and power tools, equipment and vehicles utilized in the maintenance, repair and operation of plant equipment.

Work duties require the ability to tolerate a work environment which includes contact ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

with acids, dirt, cleaning solvents, bacteria and sewage. Work duties may be performed

in areas that are poorly ventilated, underground, noisy, hazardous and inadequately

light. Work duties may be performed indoors and outdoors and in inclement weather.
