The Buda Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic and energetic Children’s Librarian. The ideal candidate will have a special interest in working with the library’s youngest patrons, babies through elementary-aged children, in addition to performing general librarian duties. JOB SUMMARY

The Children’s Librarian is responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating programs for children in the community and performs professional-level librarian work in assigned areas.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Communicates with youth, their families, local school personnel, and other outside organizations to determine youth needs and interests.
• Plans, implements, and evaluates programs for youth as assigned.
• Develops partnerships with local schools.
• Accesses funding, prepares funding proposals, and implements and tracks program budgets, including grant funds.
• Proposes budget for assigned programs; administers, monitors, and tracks this budget.
• Assists in selecting resources for purchase in all appropriate formats, weeding library materials, and addressing the needs of patrons.
• Identifies areas where new programs are needed.
• Schedules activities, facilities and volunteers as required.
Recruits, trains, and oversees volunteers.

• Promotes the programs, collections, and services of the library by preparing publicity, including social media, fliers, press releases, presentations, bibliographies and displays.
• Monitors the use of equipment and facilities.
• Uses in-depth knowledge of library resources and research methods to provide instruction and assistance and reference services to patrons using all library resources.
• Maintains contacts with local, regional and territorial organizations for youth.
• Provides peer-to-peer training for staff and volunteers as assigned.
• Performs other related job duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

Master of Science in Information Studies or equivalent; and two (2) years of related work experience.

Special Qualifications:

Effective bilingual communication desired.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of basic operational, technical, or office processes.
• Knowledge of basic library services and materials.
• Skill in the use of small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
• Skill in using computers for data entry.
• Skill in using computers for word processing and/or accounting purposes.
• Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias.
• Ability to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages/ratios/proportions and measurement.
• Ability to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
• Ability to maintain positive working relationships with city departments and personnel, outside agencies, community organizations, patrons, and the general public.
• Ability to remain flexible and open to new ideas.
• Ability and willingness to adjust hours to accommodate needs of the library.
• Ability to organize and communicate effectively.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is medium and requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects and the following physical abilities: crawling, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
