The City of Carterville is seeking a skilled and dedicated individual to serve as its Public Works Director. This position is responsible for overseeing the City’s public works operations, including streets, water treatment and distribution, sewer systems, stormwater management, and other municipal infrastructure. The Public Works Director serves as the City Engineer, Traffic Engineer, Street Commissioner, and Superintendent of Water and Sewer Works, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of services to the residents of Carterville.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform the duties of City Engineer, Traffic Engineer, Street Commissioner, and Superintendent of Water Works and Sewer Works.
- Develop and supervise plans, specifications, and estimates for all contracted work, ensuring accurate and efficient performance.
- Oversee and inspect the progress of public works projects, ensuring compliance with plans and specifications.
- Prepare surveys, plats, drawings, plans, and estimates as required by the City Council.
- Preserve all maps, plans, surveys, records, and documents related to the City’s infrastructure in an organized manner.
- Enforce ordinances concerning streets, alleys, and other public places, including opening, improving, and repairing as necessary.
- Establish and provide grades and alignments for streets, alleys, and thoroughfares when requested.
- Supervise and manage all public works staff and operations to ensure high-quality service delivery.
- Collaborate with the City Council to identify and prioritize infrastructure needs and improvements.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated expertise in basic engineering, water treatment and distribution, sewer system design and treatment, stormwater control, and their practical application.
- Strong understanding of municipal operations and public works management.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with elected officials, staff, and the public.
Additional Requirements:
- Before assuming duties, the Public Works Director must take an oath of office affirming they are not and will not be directly involved in any contract made with the City for public works or materials during their tenure.
- Devote full time to the duties of the office without engaging in outside work conflicting with City responsibilities.
