PART-TIME - Child Care Worker - Elementary Program
Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services seeks Child Care Workers for the Elementary Before and After School Program (grades K through 5) who are energetic, positive, and excellent role models for participants and volunteers. You will assist in planning, preparing, and leading activities such as art, music, sports, games, and field trips for children ages 5 through 11 in accordance with the Colorado Department of Human Services licensing regulations and Recreation Services Program Standards.
This is a .5 full-time (grant -funded) position with benefits that will follow the Harrison School District #2 calendar. Normal work schedule will be: after school hours Monday through Friday 2:45 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.; before school hours Monday 6:45 a.m. to 10:15 a.m., and Tuesday through Friday 6:45 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. The non-school day schedule will be Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. Typically, this position will require a minimum of 20 hours each week with the opportunity to work extra hours. Additional hours may be scheduled as needs arise. Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function in the performance of this job.

This is a grant-funded position with funding through June 2025 and the possibility of an extension.

Multiple positions are available across six Before & After School sites.
 
 Essential Job Functions
- the basic job duties an employee must be able to perform:
  • Assist with planning, preparation, implementation, and evaluation of age and ability-appropriate programs; ensure the quality of all programs
  • Positively interact with children; actively participate in all program areas
  • Observe and record children's behavior following Behavior Management Guidelines
  • Maintain open communication with Director and coworkers regarding program and participants
  • Comply with facility setup/takedown procedures returning program space as it was received
  • Help implement activities for special events
  • Develop and maintain good public relations with parents/caregivers and staff
  • Assist in providing information to parents/caregivers and children
  • Comply with pertinent City and divisional policies and procedures as well as State Licensing Guidelines
  • Report accidents and behavioral concerns to the Site Director or supervising Recreation Assistant
  • Assist the Site Director with the accurate and timely completion of accident, program, and administrative reports
  • Actively participate in staff meetings and trainings
  • Attend all trainings and complete State Licensing certifications as required
 We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
  • Knowledge of child developmental stages and positive behavior management skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships 
  • Ability to prioritize, think, and work independently; problem solve; and complete tasks in a timely manner
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent 
  • Possess, or obtain upon hire, and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver’s license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges 
One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education. 
  • Be bilingual in Spanish
  • Have three months (460 hours) of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience working with school-age children
  • Possess, or obtain within 30 days of hire, First Aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation certifications 
  • Experience working in a licensed school-age childcare environment
The job offer will be contingent upon the successful completion of an extensive background check, fingerprinting, and other pre-employment assessments.
 
The City of Colorado Springs offers additional compensation depending on the position, area of assignment, and specific job assignments, including shift differential, pay differential, acting or lead, special assignment, hazard pay, longevity, cell phone allowance, uniform allowance, relocation, awards, standby, call out, compensatory time off, tuition, overtime, extra duty, incentive, holiday premium, proficiency, and vacation sell back.
 
 This position requires the ability to stand, sit, stoop, walk, climb, bend, and lift up to 20-25 pounds occasionally. The ability to actively participate with youth during program activities, swimming, and field trips is also required.
