Job Description Summary

The purpose of this job is to perform lead work on an assigned shift performing a variety of tasks to ensure the proper treatment of wastewater and to sustain regulated permit limits.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities - The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job.

Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description

  • Monitors treatment plant, observes operating conditions, and interprets meter and gauge readings.
  • Trains other operators and directs their tasks.
  • Samples wastewater and performs tests.
  • Performs cleaning and janitorial duties throughout plant.
  • Records data from meters, gauges, and control panels.
  • Troubleshoots operational and equipment problems.
  • Conducts pressure washing of wastewater clarifiers and aeration basins.
  • Operates forklift or hand-truck to move materials, supplies, equipment, and collected debris.
  • Prepares work and maintenance repair orders. Performs minor and preventative maintenance. Assists in major maintenance and repair activities.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Work requires providing guidance and the potential to oversee another employee. This position may oversee work quality, training, instructing, and work assignments.

Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered Education and Experience

  • High School or equivalent.
  • 5 years’ experience in wastewater operations.

Licenses or Certifications

  • Valid Missouri D level wastewater operator’s certificate required.
  • Valid Missouri A level wastewater operator’s certificate within 6 months of hire.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position Knowledge of :

  • Wastewater treatment and hydraulics practices and procedures.
  • Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.
  • Common business software applications such as Microsoft Office.

  • Communicating verbally and in writing to meet the needs of the audience.
  • Applying active listening and asking questions for understanding.
  • Estimating time and materials needed to complete jobs.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Wastewater Operator II is the second level in the Wastewater Operator job series. Position requires certification and provides guidance to junior position.

  • Incumbents may be required to exert up to 35 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
  • Incumbents required to feel attributes of objects, grasp, push, stand, walk, drive, reach with hands / arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb / balance, operate mechanical equipment, and move up and down from / to sitting position on the floor.

Hours / Days Shift work and depending on staffing levels, it could be either 12 hour shifts or 8 hour shifts. Typically, it is 12 hour shifts either 7 am to 7 pm for day shift or 7 pm to 7 am for night shift.

One week working Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday and another week working Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday. Starting Salary $27.

68 minimum $34.05 midpoint $40.41 maximum plus $1.00 shift differential for all hours worked between 6 pm and 6 am.
