City of Compton, CA is Hiring a Lifeguard Near Compton, CA

GENERAL PURPOSE

Instructs a variety of swimming classes; and performs related duties as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED

Incumbent will work under close supervision of Pool Manager and Assistant Pool Manager.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Conducts beginning through advance swimming classes; lifesaving classes. Explains and demonstrates safe and proper techniques. Prepares daily lesson plans, materials, equipment and supplies. Tests and evaluates skill level of participants. Maintains records on attendance and participants. Prepares written reports, evaluating the instruction programs and recommending improvements. Inventories and cleans aquatic equipment. Attends in-service training and performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:
Must have completed advanced lifesaving courses stated in minimum qualifications.
Certifications:
Possession of or the ability to obtain valid and current Lifeguard, CPR/AED and First Aid certifications no later than the time of hire.
All candidates must pass the physical agility swim test (Swim 300 yards continuously, using freestyle and the breaststroke; Surface dive 7-10 feet and retrieve a 10-pound object. Tread water for 2 minutes; Exit pool without using a ladder).
MANDATORY ORIENTATION: TO BE DETERMINED

Knowledge of: Lifesaving techniques; advance swimming strokes and techniques; methods of aquatics and safety instruction.
Ability to: Perform lifesaving techniques; effectively perform and instruct participants in advance level swimming strokes; diving techniques, work with and evaluate individuals of various ages and skill levels; maintain and prepare class materials and equipment; establish and maintain cooperative working relations with other staff and the public. The ability to speak Spanish is desirable, but not required.
Age: 15 years of age and older.
APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCEDURE: All Completed applications will be reviewed and those considered most qualified will be invited to participate in an appraisal interview. Prior to employment, all candidates must provide proof of both valid and current Lifeguard Training, CPR and First Aid certificates. Official sealed documentation required upon successful completion of aforementioned training courses.
APPOINTMENT: All employment offers are conditional based upon the successful completion of a medical examination, which may include a drug screening, reference and background check. All new employees are required to take a loyalty oath.

The City of Compton offers an excellent benefits program (to eligible employees) which includes membership in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS); family-covered insurances: dental, health, vision; life insurance (for employee only); Employee Assistance Program; 15 holidays (including birthday); vacation; sick leave; bereavement leave; educational reimbursement; deferred compensation; 4/10 work week. The City also pays the employee's 8% share (9% for Fire personnel only) of contribution towards retirement.
Retirement:
Employees hired after January 1, 2013, who are new to CalPERS, or are returning members with a break in service greater than six months, will be enrolled in the 2% @ 62 retirement plan and will be required to pay up to 50% (currently 6.5%) of the normal PERS cost (9% for Fire personnel only) of contribution towards retirement.
Dental:
The City pays 100% of the full family monthly premium towards dental insurance.
Health:
The City pays 100% of the full family monthly premium based at Kaiser's rates. Employees selecting health plans with higher monthly premiums than Kaiser will incur out-of-pocket costs.
Vision:
The City pays 100% of the full family monthly premium towards vision insurance.
Life:
The City pays 100% of the monthly premium for employee only towards $40,000 life insurance coverage.
State Disability Insurance:
The City provides for State Disability Insurance at no cost to employees.
Employee Assistance Program:
Provides confidential counseling, education and referral for work and life issues at no cost to the employee; subject to program provisions.
Auto Allowance:
Employees receive $250.00 monthly auto allowance subject to approval by the City Manager.
Personal Leave Days:
Employees are allowed to designate up to three (3) days or 24 hours of accrued sick leave as personal leave per calendar year.
Holidays:
Fifteen (15) holidays per fiscal year, including your birthday. Depending upon when the holidays fall, some days are subject to become floating holidays.
Vacation:
Holidays: Fifteen per year which include: Independence Day, Labor Day, Admissions Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day, Thanksgiving Day (day following), Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday, Lincoln's Birthday, Washington's Birthday, Cinco de Mayo, Memorial Day, Employee's Birthday, Cesar Chavez Day
Sick:
Employees accrue eight hours of sick leave per month.
Bereavement:
Three working days (or five working days for out of State services) per incident for the death of an immediate family member: spouse, father, current father-in-law, mother, current mother-in-law, grandfather, grandmother, son, daughter, brother, sister, step-mother, step-father, step-son and step-daughter).
Educational Reimbursement:
Employees receive up to $1,500.00 per fiscal year for job-related courses.
Deferred Compensation:
4/10 Work Week: The City of Compton observes a 4/10 work week schedule: Monday – Thursday: 7:00 a. m. – 6:00 p. m. We are closed each Friday.
