Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Develops and maintains inventory of City trees.
- Develops and maintains list of approved street trees.
- Selects site appropriate street trees.
- Work with the Planning Department to review developer site plans and specifications for tree selection and field verify for proper installation of specified species.
- Review plans for capital improvement projects.
- Interfaces with various departments concerning the care and maintenance of new and existing trees addressing the many utilitarian site-specific issues associated with street trees.
- Interfaces with the public as needed.
- In conjunction with others provides care and maintenance of City trees and shrubs
- Assesses the health of City trees.
- Identifies dead or diseased trees.
- Manages and oversees insect and disease control on City trees.
- Manages and coordinates tree replacement program and memorial tree program.
- Selects and manages contractors and associated contracts.
- Serves as a resource to other departments regarding the care and maintenance of all City trees and shrubs.
- Improves the City’s landscape by maintaining and improving trees and shrubs.
- Works with the Planning Department to review site plans - providing arboricultural and landscape expertise.
KnowledgeJob Specifications and Qualifications:
- Means and methods of tree and shrub preservation.
- Principles of tree and shrub health
- Principles of site plan review
- Applicable tools and equipment of the trade
- Applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations
- Valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
- ISA Arborist Certification
- NC Pesticide License and or Horticulture Applicators License (preferred)
Working Conditions / Physical Requirements
- Positions in this class require: standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, handling, pushing/pulling, vision, foot controls, bending, crouching, hearing, twisting, talking.
- Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, or negligible amounts constantly AND/OR walking or standing to a significant degree.
- Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, physical hazards.
- Work independently with the ability to complete project assignments with minimal supervision.
- Plan, prioritize and organize work.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and specifications.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Knows proper planting and pruning techniques.
- Basic computer skills to effectively operate Microsoft Office
- Planting trees and shrubs
- Maintaining the health of trees and shrubs
- Working independently
- Using applicable tools and equipment of the trade
- Reviewing plans and specifications
- Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
