DESCRIPTION
**This recruitment is intended to fill vacancies in the Streets and Parks Divisions of the Public Works Department.**
The Public Works Department is seeking creative, highly talented and motivated Capital Improvement Projects Intern II. This internship will provide university students hands-on experience and on-the-job training related to their civil engineering degre e. It also provides opportunity for students to learn about the industry while applying classroom theories and concepts to "real-world" situations in the Inland Empire.
This position offers the applicant growth opportunities with exposure to transportation planning, engineering, analysis, field review, and design. The city offers a casual and energetic business environment.
Workdays of city staff are Monday through Friday, 7am to 5pm, so there is flexibility with school schedules. This position is required to work a minimum of 16-hours and maximum of 19-hours per week. This internship is year-round and may be modified each quarter.
Knowledge/Education/Experience:
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent
  • Officially be enrolled in an accredited institution of higher learning in an undergraduate program and are expected to graduate no earlier than June 2025.
Skills/Abilities:
  • Assist staff in preparing designs and performing a variety of engineering functions.
  • Perform standard transportation engineering calculations, computations, and analysis such as traffic studies.
  • Update and maintain various databases and logs.
  • Understand and interpret construction drawings.
  • Scan, copy, print, and transmit working drawings of current projects.
  • Efficiently utilize time in executing assigned tasks neatly and accurately.
  • Effectively communicate and coordinate with internal engineering team members.

The Organization
The City of Corona is a General Law city operating under a Council-Manager form of government. Policy making and legislative authority is vested in the City Council, consisting of a Mayor and four Council Members. Members of the City Council are elected by District to a four-year term. The Mayor is selected by the Council and serves as the presiding officer for one year.

The City is organized into the following departments/organizational units: Community Services, City Manager's Office, Economic Development, Finance, Fire, Human Resources, Information Technology, Legal and Risk Management, Police, Planning & Development, Public Works and Utilities. Oversight of these departments is divided between the City Manager and two Assistant City Managers.

The City's total operating budget for Fiscal Year 2024 is $ 369.9 million with a General Fund operating budget of $ 194.5 million. Corona enjoys a workforce of 860 dedicated employees who provide high quality services to its residents and visitors each day.

Successful candidates will be placed on an eligible list, and highly qualified candidates will be referred to the hiring authority for further consideration. Candidates advancing in the selection process will receive information/instructions via email.
Temporary/part-time employment status does not qualify for City benefits, except for those required by law.
The City does not belong to the Social Security system. Therefore, enrollment in the Nationwide PST 457 retirement program is mandatory and requires a contribution of 7.5% of base earnings. The City contributes 1.3% and the employee contributes 6.2% of base earnings.
Most part-time shifts for temporary/part-time employees must not exceed 999 hours on a fiscal year basis (July 1 through June 30). If an employee is an active CalPERS member they may work up to 28 hours per week.
There are no rights to employment and employment may end with or without cause or advance notice.
