This is a responsible, supervisory position in organizing and monitoring various recreation activities. Work involves planning, developing and instructing recreation programs, supervision of staff and evaluation of program performance. Work is performed under general supervision
Essential Job Duties
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Teaches, supervises, organizes, and instructs a variety of recreation activities and sports for youth, teens, adults in a recreation setting.
- Trains, schedules and supervises designated staff and volunteers.
- Assists with a variety of special events, recreation programs and sporting events.
- Provides guidance on work related matters and assists in resolving employee issues, if necessary.
- Coordinates and promotes special events, advertising, and vendor coordination.
- Promotes interest in programs through publicity, flyers and social media.
- Ensures that recreation facilities and equipment are used properly.
- Receives and electronically enters registration and payment information.
- Promotes safety and ensures all appropriate laws, rules and regulations are strictly enforced and respected.
- Safely transports participants to various programs by passenger van.
- Understands and agrees to working at times, nights, weekends, and holidays as an essential component of the responsibilities.
- Develops collaborative relationships with parents.
- Works well and in a nurturing spirit with children or adults with special needs
- Responds appropriately to situations that may require urgent medical care and attention.
- Fosters positive employee relations and employee morale on a City-wide basis.
- Perform all functions and responsibilities according to the Palm Beach County Code of Ethics and Florida State Statutes 112.313.
Additional For Out Of School Positions
- Must complete a 45-hour Childcare Certification Program approved by the State of Florida within one year of hire
- Child Development Accreditation preferred
- Ability to pass scheduled physical exams in compliance with Florida Department of Health
- Must have current and valid state of Florida driver’s license.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associates degree or two years of college in a recreation study field.
- Three (3) years professional, verifiable experience in recreation program/s and supervision of subordinate staff, activities and programs for various age groups.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License, with a good driving record.
- Must possess CPR, AED, and First Aid Certifications or obtain within 30 days of hire date
- Knowledge of Logic Pro 10 for positions assigned to 505 Teen Center Recording Studio.

Knowledge of fundamentals of recreation. Ability to plan, organize, supervise and instruct special activities for youth, teens and adults. Knowledge of the City's policies, procedures, and practices. Skill in policy interpretation and application. Demonstrate ability to effectively utilize personal computer and office software such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Outlook. Ability to enter and retrieve data accurately using the City’s mainframe system or other required applications, including RecTrac. Ability to work independently and to adhere to established policies and procedures. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form. Ability to manage and prioritize routine, specialized and complex assignments and problems utilizing knowledge acquired through prior education, training, and experience. Ability to adapt to an evolving and continually improving environment. Must be able to work a varied number of hours per week that will include nights and weekends, depending on scheduled activities. Working outdoors is an essential condition of this position.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear, use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with both hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to walk, bend, run and stand. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Works inside and out-of-doors in various weather conditions.
