SUMMARY:
Under the direct supervision of the Recreation Center Coordinator, the Front Desk Recreation Center Staff will serve as the initial point of contact for the Recreation Center. This is a part-time, entry level position with the potential for professional development and growth. This position will provide exceptional customer service to our patrons and assist staff with all areas as needed.
Example Shifts:
Weekday evenings 6pm-10pm
Saturdays 7:30am-11:30am, 11:30am-4:30pm, 4:30pm-9pm
Sundays 11:30am-4:30pm, 4:30pm-9pm

Supervision: Reports to: Recreation Center Coordinator
Position will not have direct supervision over other staff.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
HS Diploma/GED and one (1) year of clerical/receptionist level experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned:
- Assist with scheduling and reservations.
- Sell memberships and register class participants.
- Answer phones and greet patrons.
- Monitor the use of program facility and that equipment is being used safely.
- Light cleaning and restocking.
- Provide assistance with special projects.
- Supports the relationship between the City of Elgin and the public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of navigating a computer and software’s.
- Knowledge of basic information about City of Elgin programs and facilities.
- Skilled in providing exceptional customer service.
- Skilled in office interpersonal and telephone etiquette.
- Skilled in communicating with adults and children.
- Skilled in resolving problems or situations requiring the exercise of good judgment.
- Ability to exhibit good work ethics and attendance.
- Ability to communicate with professionalism.
- Ability to work independently and in a group setting.
- Ability to learn City ordinances and State/Federal regulations
- Ability to quickly absorb knowledge of methods, practices, and terminology.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of work-related issues and City information.

In a typical work setting, front desk recreation center staff:
Interpersonal Relationships
High level of contact working closely with staff and the public. Communicate with people daily by telephone, e-mail, and in person. May be subjected to irate members of the public, who may use profanity.
Hours/Travel
Usually work 20-25 hours a week but may be required to work evenings or weekends to meet deadlines or for special projects/assignments.
Physical Demands and Work Conditions
Always work indoors. May travel by foot or vehicle to other City buildings. Work close to other staff, frequently required to sit, and stand while using hands, arms, and fingers to reach and input data in systems. Exposure to noise from close by departments, staff and public. May lift and move boxes weighing up to 25 pounds.
Disaster Service Workers Clause
In the event of a declared emergency or any undeclared emergency or natural disaster that threatens the life, health and/or safety of the public, employees may be assigned to assist rescue and relief workers. Such assignments may be in locations, during hours and performing work significantly different from the employees’ normal work assignments and may continue through the recovery phase of the emergency.
