JOB
This position responds to fire and other emergency incidents to suppress fires, rescue victims, provide emergency medical care, and perform other duties as required. An incumbent in this position may be designated “Senior Firefighter.”
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Responds to fire calls and uses firefighting skills to evaluate and carry out actions to most efficiently control the emergency at hand; assists with the fighting of structural fires.Provides patient care to citizens in non-emergency and emergencies to include determining the nature and extent of illness/injury and establishing priority for required care.Completes accurate and detailed patient care reports in all required formats and required databases.Provides a pre-arrival verbal report, arrival face-to-face report, and a written account of patient assessment, treatment, and changes to the receiving staff/facility.Performs firefighting and life rescue duties, including responding to various emergencies; conducting fire suppression functions; administering first aid and emergency medical treatment; providing basic and/or advanced life support; operating equipment; laying hose, raising and climbing ladders, etc.; conducting search and rescue operations; providing primary patient care (CPR, oxygen therapy, etc.); and containing hazardous materials spills.Participates in training programs by attending classes, participating in drills, simulations, etc., studying City geography, and participating in physical training and conditioning programs.Performs maintenance and minor repairs of fire station, grounds and equipment; performs safety checks and inspections on various pieces of equipment; checks oil, filters, fluids, etc., on vehicles and apparatus; maintains supply inventory and makes requests for purchases; performs general housekeeping functions within and around stations.Participates in fire safety and prevention programs; makes presentations/teaches classes to the general public; conducts station tours; conducts pre-incident surveys and inspections and assists in developing pre-fire plans and drawing layouts of commercial structures.Inspects and services fire hydrants; checks and records water pressure; inspects and maintains personal protective equipment.Prepares reports regarding incidents; completes forms; enters run information into computer.Assists in searching for evidence for investigative staff after fire incident; performs salvage and overhaul operations.Must not pose a direct threat or significant risk of substantial harm to the safety or health of himself/herself or others.Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined by the City of Enterprise.Must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the City's safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel.Must be regularly available and willing to work at least 24 hours per day, 72 hours per week, or such other hours per day or hours per week as the City determines are necessary or desirable to meet its operational needs.Must be available and willing to work such weekends and holidays as the City determines are necessary or desirable to meet its operational needs.Must be available and willing to travel to such locations and with such frequency as the City determines is necessary or desirable to meet its operational needs.Must perform duties onsite, except those job duties which are customarily or by their nature performed offsite (such as offsite work meetings with City customers, clients or citizens, making deliveries to designated destinations, traveling to field offices to meet with subordinates or conduct training, etc.)May operate fire apparatus and equipment and drive apparatus to incident scenesReports administrative and/or operational problems to supervisor.Opens e-mail, and reviews postings to review department memos to remain current on changing procedures and standard operating guidelines.Maintains required certifications by attending training courses as needed.Maintains communication with other shifts by exchanging information at every shift change.Performs other related duties as assigned and related job tasks as assigned by upper level supervisory staff.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.Applicant must meet requirements set forth by the Alabama Fire College and Personnel Standards Commission.Possession of or ability to readily obtain and maintain state EMT-B certification (within one year).Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.Certification as an Alabama Fire Fighter is preferred.Possession of an active Alabama Department of Public Health Paramedic license and National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians paramedic certificate.A completed employment application.During the probationary period the Fire Fighter must: Successfully complete the 360-hour Fire Fighter I/II Certification School.Successfully complete required Hazardous Materials Training.Possession of a valid operator driver's license and an acceptable driving record.Applicant must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.In an emergency and/or standby situation, an employee in this position must be able to report to Boll Weevil Circle (Enterprise) within a maximum of 60 minutes from the time of notification.Employees are required to submit to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with the City of Enterprise policy which includes pre-employment and random tests for the duration of employment in this position.Must meet the City of Enterprise's employment physical standard which includes drug/alcohol testing.An applicant for this position is subject to various background investigations.Work is performed in a fire station and in the field exposing the employee to various outside atmospheric conditions; conditions such as adverse weather conditions, fumes, noxious odors, dust, mists, gases, and poor ventilation that affect the respiratory system, eyes or the skin; possible bodily injury from moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools, or machinery, electrical shock, radiation, explosions, falling from high, exposed places, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals. Exposure to toxic fumes, irritants, particulates, biological (infectious) and nonbiological hazards, and/or heated gases, despite the use of personal protective ensembles and SCBA Lift object over 125 pounds. Exposure to sustained periods of exposure to non-weather related hot, cold, and/or humid temperatures/conditions; open flames; hazardous diseases; and body fluids of victims. Exposure to volatile situations and imminent danger when performing the essential functions of the job. Work time may require irregular hours, shift times, weekends, holidays, and/or on-call status with limited sleep. The incumbent's working conditions are typically very loud.
