City of Evanston is Hiring a Seasonal Recreation Maintenance Near Evanston, IL

DescriptionThis position performs work under the direction of a Recreation Manager or designee. Work includes cleaning and maintenance on interior and exterior areas of various park and lakefront facilities from late March – late October. Work includes cleaning restrooms, mopping, sweeping, trash removal, snow fence installation or removal, open and secures buildings, litter pick up, trash removal, recycling, stocking, program set ups and break downs, painting, and trailering of equipment. Staff may be asked to perform water testing at swimming beaches and other city facilities. Staff will be scheduled to work up to 40 hours/week and schedules may include mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Job SummarySpecific assignment will include some or all of the following:
  • Performs a variety of custodial duties including, but not limited to, cleaning equipment, restrooms, litter pick up, program set ups and break downs, and trash removal.
  • Inspects assigned park and recreation sites and equipment regularly regarding condition, safety, and degree of use; recommends more complex maintenance and repair if needed.
  • Drives a city vehicle to and from sites to transport supplies and materials
  • Will be required to check in at various sites using city issued electronic devices
  • Posts picnic notifications and prepare sites for scheduled activities.
  • Submits 311 requests for identified repairs.
  • Assists in the removal of graffiti in parks locations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Must possess a High school diploma, GED or higher. Completion of some college or trade school classes is preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.
  • Possession of work experience in an education or recreation environment is preferred.
  • Possession of work experience in a supervisory capacity is preferred.
  • Must be willing and able to begin training in March, with full-time hours starting in early April and continuing through late October.
  • Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:
  • Ability to work with, mentor other staff.
  • Knowledge of the materials, methods, tools, and equipment used in restroom cleaning, safe operation of vehicles and general public clean-up.
  • Ability to read, understand, and apply instructions for the safe operation of cleaning supplies and tools, as well as hand tools.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.
  • Ability to greet and communicate with the public in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Ability to read, understand, interpret and locate addresses within the City of Evanston boundaries illustrated on a Map.
  • Ability to multi-task in performing various duties, requests and responsibilities.
Physical Work Requirements
  • Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions such cold, high winds, rain, high temperatures, and humidity.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor able to lift minimum of 50 lbs. to kneel, bend, stand or sit for long periods of time, identify or distinguish colors.
  • Ability to work in situations where the following are present: loud noise levels, vibrations, fumes, dust and dirt.
  • Ability to climb a ladder.
Supervision:
  • Work is performed under the general direction of the Conservation and Outdoors Division Manager. Assignments may vary from day to day. Assignments can be either verbal or written, with the employee determining proper procedure and work methods and is responsible for completing the work according to City work rules and safety regulations. Work is reviewed through ongoing observation, written and verbal communication, meetings and feedback from supervisors and other department employees. Guidance is provided through rules and regulations, policies and procedures, Personnel Rules and OSHA. Work is evaluated at least once per season for the safe and skilled operation of equipment, quality of tasks, adherence to work rules, and performance in accordance with classification standard. Team Leaders are responsible for site inspections, ongoing observations, and written and verbal communications.
Public Contact
  • The employee has contact with the general public in residential areas and with the public using parks and recreational areas. The employee may need to respond to questions and complaints and provide general direction to the public; the employee has regular contact with other City employees in order to share information and complete work assignments. Any questions, concerns, or complaints arising in the field will be forwarded to the Recreation Manager
RateStarting at $17.00/ hour
ScheduleThis is a full-time, seasonal position. Scheduled up to 40 hours a week and schedules may includes mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Total hours for this position not to exced 1000 hours in the calendar year.
