$16.7107/Hourly (Non-Exempt) (G) - Signs and Markings Technician I

DAYS WORKED: Monday-Friday

HOURS WORKED: 6:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

JOB DUTIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Works under the direct supervision of the Traffic Signs & Markings Supervisor.

Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties in fabricating and maintaining traffic signs for the division.

Makes, installs, maintains, and repairs traffic signs including layout, assembly, and disassembly, pole (post) setting, straightening and graffiti removal.

Maintains and updates traffic control inventory (ArcGis) system both in writing and using a computer.

Assists in pavement marking installations, executing city-wide curb painting program, cutting traffic control signal detection loops, deploying traffic control for city-wide special events.

May operate striping truck for long line paint run program.

Assists in the long line striping layout program.

Shares responsibility in maintaining and operating thermoplastic machine.

Shares responsibility of designing new signs for City Buildings or other special signage.

Assist Traffic Signs & Markings Supervisor in reviewing and inspecting the completion of work orders.

Assist sign and marking crew in scheduled sign maintenance or pavement marking work as directed by Traffic Signs & Markings Supervisor.

Assist Traffic Signs & Markings Supervisor in preparing work orders and conducting New Mexico 811 calls for new sign installations.

Assists Traffic Signs & Markings Supervisor in grading pavement markings and laying out pavement marking locations for new installations.

Assist Traffic Signs & Markings Supervisor in preparing spreadsheets and cost estimating.

Shares responsibility of maintaining, operating and deploying variable message boards.

Assists in projecting needs for equipment, materials and supplies for a specific project.

Using excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.

Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.

Is generally alert to conditions and events occurring on city streets and rights-of-way and can respond accordingly.

While performing job duties, takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances and acts accordingly to prevent accidents.

Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials and equipment.

Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Perform some or all the duties of the Traffic Signs & Markings Supervisor as directed.

Perform some or all the duties of the Sign Technician or Traffic Painter, as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is subject to the City of Farmington's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Policy which includes: pre employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.

Extensive background checks required.

This position requires a baseline audiometric examination.

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent
  • Valid New Mexico driver's license with acceptable driving record for past three years.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1 year(s) experience as a traffic/transportation crew member, traffic operations, or other related experience
  • Working knowledge of the Manual On Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • IMSA certified in Signs and Markings Level 1
  • ATSSA certified in Traffic Control Technician
  • ATSSA certified in Pavement Marking Technician
  • Past experience working in work zones with public roadways utilizing proper traffic control
  • Ability to drive road striping trucks

Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.

Ability to read and follow instructions.

Ability to tolerate weather extremes for extended periods of time.

Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.

Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

Ability to provide leadership and directions and follow instruction.

Ability to operate tools and equipment listed.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Painting equipment, brushes, rollers, road striping truck, post pounder, post puller, miscellaneous hand and power tools such as shovels, picks, jack hammers, motor vehicle, telephone, mobile radio, smart phone, personal computer, tablets and calculator. Operates utility and sign trucks, sign making machines, and thermoplastic machines.
