Additional Information: This position is posted with the full salary range indicating future potential earnings; however, the actual hiring salary for this position is dependent upon relevant experience and qualifications above minimum requirements and position funding. Administrative Duties

Actively supports and upholds the City's stated mission and values. Performs entry-level duties associated with a recreation facility or recreation program emphasis area. This position will work directly in the Aquatics area of the Flagstaff Aquaplex and act as Manager on Duty for the full facility (Aquaplex).

Under direct supervision of an Aquatics Recreation Program Coordinator, employees of this class are responsible for assisting with and monitoring the day-to-day operation of recreation facilities, activities, and/or programs. Employees are expected to work independently during an assigned shift.

  • Compliance: This job carries out day-to-day activities in accordance with Federal, State, and Local laws, rules, and regulations as well as City policies and procedures.
  • Council Communications: This job carries out day-to-day activities in accordance with Council's adopted priorities and direction.
  • Reporting: This job does not have duties related to reporting to Federal/State/Local agencies.
Examples of the Work Performed

EXAMPLES OF THE WORK PERFORMED (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
  • Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • Assists patrons via phone and in person; provides information to the public.
  • Registers participants in programs.
  • Collects and deposits fees.
  • Organizes, implements, and evaluates activities, classes, and programs.
  • Observes patron participation at recreation facilities and/or during programs to ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and rules.
  • Monitors the use of facilities and equipment.
  • Opens and closes recreation facilities as needed.
  • Directs the work of assigned temporary staff and/or volunteers. Assists with staff training and disciplinary action.
  • Assists with planning of In-service trainings for all Aquaplex staff.
  • Performs basic facility set-up, maintenance, and/or custodial duties as required, including changes to pump room chemicals and settings.
  • Inspects equipment for safety and initiates maintenance and repairs.
  • Maintains attendance, program, and revenue records and prepares summary reports.
  • Operates a personal computer to produce and distribute correspondence and promotional information.
  • Assists with supply and equipment orders.
  • Attends staff meetings and training opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • One year (full time equivalent) of recreation employment or two years of college course work in Parks and Recreation or a closely related field.
  • CPR/ First Aid/ and Lifeguard certification.
  • Or any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the above Minimum Requirements.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
  • Associates or Bachelor's Degree in Parks and Recreation or a related field.
  • One year (full time equivalent) of supervisory experience.
  • Previous Swimming Lesson teaching experience, and or ability to obtain/re-certify as a Water Safety Instructor.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to obtain Lifeguard Instructor Certification within one year of employment
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity
  • Ability to obtain valid Arizona driver's license and operate a 12-15 passenger van.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible schedules, split shifts, evenings, and weekends as assigned. This position works Sundays and rotating weekly evening shifts.
  • Ability to lift objects 10-20 pounds routinely, and 20-50 pounds occasionally.
  • Positions working with youth and/or vulnerable populations: pre-employment background investigation.
  • Hepatitis B vaccinations within one year of employment, unless declined by the employee.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
  • Knowledge of a variety of recreation programs and activities pertaining to the assigned recreation emphasis area (aquatics, athletics, youth, fitness, seniors, therapeutic recreation, outdoor recreation, ice/roller skating, etc.).
  • Knowledge of recreation program and facility operations, including ability to assist with scheduling and coordinating activities.
  • Ability to facilitate the leisure pursuits of a variety of age groups, interests, and abilities, including knowledge of modifying activities to ensure accessibility by disabled populations.
  • Ability to promote the goals and objectives of the Recreation Services within the scope of assigned duties.
  • Ability to interact tactfully and courteously with the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, colleagues, other agencies, and other city employees.
  • Ability to represent the City and Recreation Services in a professional manner.
  • Ability to handle money and make change.
  • Ability to use a personal computer and word processing software.
  • Ability to perform aquatic area drills and skills checks.
  • Ability to assist with and independently lead certification classes (i.e. Lifeguarding, CPR/First Aid, and babysitting).
  • Ability to independently lead staff trainings, swimming lessons, and drills for facility.
  • Aptitude for dependability.
  • Written and verbal communication skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger/handle/feel, reach with hands and arms, talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to sit, climb or balance, and is occasionally required to stoop/kneel/crouch/crawl, taste or smell.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
  • There are no special vision requirements for this position.
  • Working conditions include frequent exposure to wet or humid conditions (non-weather), and toxic or caustic chemicals; regular exposure to extreme cold (non-weather); and occasional exposure to work near moving mechanical parts, work in high precarious places, fumes of airborne particles, and outdoor weather conditions.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
