City of Flint is Hiring a Fleet Mechanic II Near Flint, MI

Performs advanced work in the repair, maintenance and modification of heavy motorized equipment, heavy and light trucks and automobiles, and fire trucks and equipment. Vehicle and equipment maintenance consists of preventive maintenance, mechanical and electrical systems diagnostics, and mechanical and electrical repairs and replacements.
  • Overhaul, repair, and maintain fire equipment and trucks that have hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical utility systems and controls and features not commonly found on ordinary vehicles; repair centrifugal and rotary pumps; maintain and repair hydraulic operated aerial ladders; maintain, perform tune-ups, and service fire equipment engines. 
  • Diagnose mechanical defects in pickup trucks, automobiles, dump trucks, tractors, motor graders, street sweepers, forklifts, bulldozers, backhoes, loaders, scrapers, excavators, and other diesel and gas-powered construction equipment. 
  • Perform needed repairs and complete approved work, ensuring that clearances, fittings, adjustments, settings, replacements, and repairs are correct and precise in accordance with existing technical manuals, specifications, or instructions. 
  • Repairs, overhauls, or rebuilds engines and does other major repairs of systems such as diesel, gasoline, and other types of internal combustion engines, automatic and standard transmissions, heavy duty drive line systems, and hydraulic utility systems and controls. 
  • Repair and maintain heavy equipment such as bulldozers, road graders, rollers, front-end loaders, backhoes, and similar power shovels; and similar heavy construction and earth moving vehicles. 
  • Fit and install parts, pistons, piston rings, valves, bearings, gears, and cylinders to appropriate tolerances.
  • Make changes or modifications in accordance with specifications and guidelines. 
  • Connect, mesh, align, and adjust items and systems to assure proper operations of the complete system or vehicle and test completed work to assure proper performance of equipment repaired. 
  • Maintain work, time, material records and work orders.
  • Maintain shop cleanliness, repair shop equipment as necessary. 
  • Assist in new employee orientation as assigned. 
  • Good attendance is required.
  • Works in a manner safe to the individual and other people; keeps work area clean and safe; follows safety rules and safe work practices; uses safety equipment as required. 
  • May assist in other sections of the department as necessary. This duty is performed as needed. 
  • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned. Keeps time and work records, requisitions parts, and recommends the ordering of parts, tools, and equipment. May maintain inventory records on automotive parts, lubricants, wheels, and tires.
  • May perform emergency road service and related field repairs.
  • Must meet all requirements for Fleet Mechanic I
  • Minimum of six (3) years of full-time, experience performing heavy equipment and mechanical repairs 
  • OR 
  • Bachelor’s degree (or an equivalent number of coursework hours) in Automotive Technology and two (2) years of experience as a Mechanic.
  • Superior knowledge of the design, operation, and repair of light and heavy-duty gasoline and diesel equipment, hydraulic systems, and accessory power equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical defects and ability to determine parts and adjustments necessary to put equipment into proper operating condition.
  • Ability to meet physical, visual, and mental standards of the job.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a manner that will not needlessly endanger the safety of oneself, other persons, and equipment. 
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT(S):
  • Possession of a valid State of Michigan Driver's License.
  • Possession of a valid State of Michigan CDL with class B endorsement or higher OR to obtain within 6 months of appointment.
  • Certification as a Specialty Mechanic in all categories of heavy-duty truck repair as defined by the Michigan Department of State (Categories include Engine Repair-Gasoline, Engine Repair Diesel, Drive Train, Brakes & Braking Systems, Suspension & Steering Systems, and Electrical Systems.) OR equivalent qualification/certification in a branch of the United States Military Service (copy of DD-214 must be provided as proof of qualification). 
  • Possession of hand tolls as defined by the agreement between City of Flint and Local 1600 AFSCME.
  • Ability and willingness to continue to pursue additional State of Michigan Specialty Certifications.
  • Failure to maintain the minimum requiredcertifications may result in disciplinary action up to and including discharge.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel.
