ANNUAL ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE: $53,000.00 - $67,000.00 (Salaries are paid biweekly)

Job Summary

Colorado is famous for enjoying four beautiful seasons throughout the year. But there are always folks who work their hardest to keep a sense of winter year-round. Are you one of those?

The City of Fort Collins Recreation Department is looking for a Technician II, Facilities (Recreation) who will oversee facility needs and staff at our popular ice rink at the Edora Pool Ice Center (EPIC). This position will manage the maintenance of our ice facility and supervise up to 10-15 part-time staff. This position is fast-paced and supports a variety of our programs along with rental groups and community partners.
The schedule for the Sr Supervisor will be flexible with more hours (about 75%) falling during weekday business hours, but there will be evening and weekend events on a regular basis. This is a fully in-person position that may allow for a small portion of work from home. What are we searching for? One to two years of experience in ice operations, hockey or figure skate programming, hosting user groups in limited-space facilities, and supervision over direct reports. Ice certifications are a plus. See below for additional qualifications and experience requirements.
Note: The list of required certifications/licenses/specialized training identified below includes the full scope of requirements for many positions within the recreation department. For this particular position, a valid driver’s license is required. CPR/AED and First Aid Certification are required within 6 months of employment.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.

  • Works independently and as a member of a collaborative team to provide exceptional activities, services, and resources to the public.
  • Supervision of part-time facilities staff.
  • Responsible for cleaning and routine ice maintenance/repairs on the Zamboni, ice edger, refrigeration equipment, condenser, dehumidifier, dasher boards, glass, and ice thickness.
  • Works directly with management to provide high quality and safe ice conditions for all programs/activities and special events.
  • Coordinates development and submittal of regular reports, records and logs concerning preventative, regular and emergency maintenance, supplies and inventory.
  • Create an ice resurfacing training program to maintain an adequate supply of back-up operators.
  • Create an inventory list of all ice rink tools, equipment, and supplies as well as the orderly and secure placement and storage of these items.
  • Keeps the Ice resurfacer washed, waxed and clean on a weekly basis.
  • Responsible for training part-time drivers on the safe operation of the ice resurfacer, skate sharpener, ice edger, refrigeration system readings and associated equipment.
  • Maintains awareness of activities, events, and customers within facilities while on duty, communicating with supervisor and third-party vendors as needed.
  • Sharpens hockey and figure skates.
  • Responsible for maintaining quality ice, regular edging, temperature, and depth readings.
  • Completes forms for task completion, safety/incident reports, and facility/equipment repairs as needed.
  • Maintains custodial supply and equipment inventory and notifies supervisors of any repair or replenishment needs.
  • May perform basic custodial duties throughout the facility as needed including laundry, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and light snow removal as needed between Parks Department clearing efforts.
  • Required to manage ice equipment inventory and ice maintenance schedule.
  • Completes required Department and City trainings and attends staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Responds to facility emergencies following established protocol and training.
  • Identifies and submits all safety and maintenance issues to Sr. Manager.
  • Participates in conception, development, and implementation of innovative and creative solutions leading to continuous process improvement.
  • Inspects, maintains, and repairs of fire systems, general equipment, tools, garage doors and openers, automatic doors and ADA-accommodation equipment.
  • Purchases and or orders supplies, materials, parts equipment necessary to do job.
  • Responsible for the supervision of vendors and vendor employees within given projects.
  • Inspects various equipment for potential problems and safety hazards.
  • Utilizes mobile and computer applications to support facilities maintenance.
  • Identifies and understands maintenance issues through customer and technician communication.
  • May develop estimates of labor hours and material cost for minor remodels or small projects.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Ice equipment knowledge and maintenance; Olympia (IceBear) experience preferred.

  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to work with diverse population of customers and staff members and troubleshoot high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to perform building maintenance activities including carpentry, plumbing, painting, roofing, flooring, concrete, and asphalt repair. Similar, but not identical skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other City departments/divisions, City management, public officials, and the public.
  • Ability to operate a pick-up and van.
  • Knowledge of basic math.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform data entry to monitor work order status and reports.
  • General understanding of HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, Commercial Pools, and other general facility maintenance trades.
  • Ability to effectively train, oversee, motivate, and work as a team with hourly employees.
  • Working knowledge of safety practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment including but not limited to; Scissor lift, Forklift, etc.

Required Qualifications

MINIMUM
PREFERRED
High School Diploma or GED and or functionally related licenses or certificates

Experience Requirements

  • 3-5 years of technical experience in office buildings, recreational facilities, swimming pools, ice rinks, police departments, fire department and systems maintenance; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
