POSITION SUMMARY
The Development Services Department's Community Enhancement and Compliance Division is seeking a Code Compliance Supervisor.
This position supervises Code Compliance Officers in the enforcement of local and state regulations relating to the Minimum Housing Code, land use, and landscaping. Work includes the interpretation of, and recommendations for changes in legal provisions for the use of buildings and promoting and maintaining harmonious relationships with individuals and neighborhood groups in the community. Determines work priorities when scheduling and assigning work. Assists Senior Officers and Code Officers with cases and issues that arise.
This job classification is included within the bargaining unit represented by Federation of Public Employees (Supervisory) and therefore is subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Federation of Public Employees.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Supervises a comprehensive community enhancement and code compliance inspection program; supervises and participates in investigations
  • Supervises subordinates in resolving citizen complaints and takes proper steps to inform appropriate departments
  • Assists in planning, organizing and supervising the work and training of subordinate inspectors; may assist in supervising office staff
  • Receives and assigns the responsibility for investigation of complaints relating to the construction, repair, alteration, use, occupancy and maintenance of all buildings and structures
  • Issues citations to violators and coordinates the prosecution of violators, when necessary, to assure compliance with ordinance
  • Meets with attorneys, public officials, architects, engineers, fire marshals, builders, contractors, property owners
  • Works with the Police Department in the enforcement of Minimum Housing Code and building standards to clean up drug, crime, and blighted areas
  • Supervises the maintenance of activity records and submits a periodic report reflecting workload, citations issued, compliance, and various enforcement statistics
  • Attends homeowner association and other community meetings
  • Recommends changes in policies, practices and procedures of the Community Inspections Division; ensures that they are implemented to the approval of the Division Manager
  • Recommends disciplinary action in compliance with union contracts
  • Completes employee performance evaluations and reviews
  • Participates in the budget development and review process
  • Performs related work as required
JOB REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent and six (6) or more months of additional training;
  2. Three (3) years of experience in various types of building construction, code enforcement, or inspection work, one (1) year of which is supervisory or lead worker;
  3. Florida Association of Code Enforcement (FACE) Certifications: Fundamentals of Code Enforcement and Administrative Aspects of Code Enforcement or equivalent. If equivalent certification is used candidate shall obtain FACE certification: Fundamentals of Code Enforcement as a requirement of the position within one (1) year.
Preferences :
Three (3) years of Code Compliance/Enforcement experience;
One (1) year supervising Code Enforcement Officers;
Typing speed of 40 wpm accurately.

Applicants must attain a minimum score of 70 in each part of the examination in order to qualify. All successful applicants may be required to take a medical examination and/or pass a drug screening prior to appointment.
An eligible veteran who enters an open-competitive examination shall receive preference points added to the total passing score earned in the examination as provided for in the Florida Statutes. To obtain veteran's preference, candidates MUST submit a copy of separation papers and the City of Fort Lauderdale's veteran's preference claim form ( J-204)
